Title: Propane X/ Rated X
Post by: asv457 on March 07, 2006, 12:49:01 PM
I scanned some old prints of the Propane X or Rated X car.  These are from the Spring Fling Show in Van Nuys, CA about 15 years ago.  The sign reads, "714 678-XXX/ 4 Sale/ OR Mopar/ Trades/ 90% Complete/ Rebuilt # match motor."  714 was all of Orange County back then.

If I'm not mistaken I had always thought the Propane X car was owned by a lady in the northeast of America. Any possiblity this is another car?
It could be the Propane X car as well I notice it is a HEMI and that the Propane X car was R4 red with a white tail stripe. It was also a very early C500 as I recall too. Somewhere around the 5th one built or so.

The car definately spent time in New Jersey.  There is an oval decal behind the "For Sale" sign that reads, "New Jersey Bracket Racing Assn," around a cartoon car.  The decal on the back of the passenger rear window reads, "Tom Chamberlin."
It was a four speed, manual steering car.  The Oct. 1970 Popular Mechanics has a short article on LPG cars with a photo of Propane-X.  The lettering is different and its wearing cragar S/S wheels up front.

I would love to know where that car wound up going to. As I said before I believe it is the 5th one built, as in 69 500's. Being that the first is 610 I think the Propane X car is 615. Also think it had the same options as the first ones, cloth inset seats, power windows and such.

I'm guessing it might have even had the buildsheet to the first one in it.

Anyone else notice that the rear marker light bezels are painted body color not stripe color on the Prone X car in that magazine article?

Those pictures of that rated X car show the trunk floor cut right where that article shows the propane tank, and there is no gas tank in the car. looks like the same car to me.

did X rated , have / or signs of having power windows because propane X had them. need vin numbers or fender tag codes to be sure, probably is the same C500.

Tan Top do you have the fender tag information for the Propane X car? All I know is the VIN and i'm assuming it is equiped like the 4 cars that predeed it in the VIN order. All are the same color interior, exterior, and stripe. Only difference is 1 of them is an AT.

I think he gathered that from the article.  It mentions that the car " is equipped with radio, heater, power windows, power steering, and power brakes.  It also has been completely undersealed."

It would be cool if he or someone else had the tag info though!

Which would make it identical to the 4 cars right in front of it on the assembly line. From the first one to the Propane X car which to me is the 5th one built, are all R4 red, with cloth insert seats, power windows, and consoles, and white tail stripes. However 1 of those cars was an Automatic for sure, then 3 of the others are 4 speeds for sure, but 1 I'm unsure of.

And yet the Propane X does.  Hmmm?

I still think they are the same car personally.

I would think that removing the wing windows would shave a hair more weight off of the car, thus in a racing application making it a better avenue.

What made you dig up this thread the other day? INteresting note though about the wing windows I hadn't noticed that.
