I have decided to bite the bullett and go ahead to build the engine that I wanted from the start. I will be ordering a 512 stroker kit from 440 Source tomorrow.

The kit I am ordering will use my 440 block with the 4.25 crank,7.1 rods, and the dish pistons have  -17cc valve reliefs with a compressison height of 1.480 and would be .015 below deck.
(I am not sure if they are figuring this with a factory 440 deck height of 10.725 as I figured that the pistons would be .010 in the hole)

440 Source says with 84cc heads this combo should produce 10.05 compression with a .039 gasket. I am also ordering the billet steel main caps and SFI damper from them.

I already have the Aluminum Stealth heads and a 950 Holley DP. I have not chosen a cam yet and will do that when I get the short block finished.

Are there any tips about this combo that I should know about?  Should it be pump gas friendly????  :shruggy:

You should be able to run close to 11.1 compression with aluminum heads, and run pump gas. Yes they are figureing those compression's out by using the factory deck height, and an .039 thousandths gasket. Are you going to buy an off the shelf cam or get a custom grind.??? I would at least use studs with your new main caps  or buy aluminum caps and studs. Oh, what  kind of rockers are you using. :icon_smile_question:

That's the same kit I used. Pistons did measure 0.015 below deck so I used Cometic 0.027 head gaskets to get 0.042 quench with Eddy heads. I calculated compression ratio of 10.3:1. Also running a Performer RPM intake, Comp XS290S and 950 Proform carb. Got about 1200 miles on the engine with no problems.

So tell me, (since I am still assembling my 512) what was it like when you droppped the hammer the first time..

Yes I definitely will be running ARP main studs. The cam will be an off the shelf solid grind and I will go with the same Crane Gold 1.6 rocker setup that you have.

A close friend of mine ran a 400 low deck with the following combo and was not able to run 93 pump. That is why I am trying to keep the compression a little lower.

His first time out to the track the best ET he had was 11.82 and it was a very, very poor 60 ft as he spun his tires well past the 60 foot mark. He also could not bring the car up to stall speed as he had to foot brake it and the brakes would not hold it.
There was alot more potential in the car (70 Charger) but he ended up selling it.

Eage 4.15 crank
11.2 compression
Eagle rods
Eddy 84cc heads unported, Fel Pro 1009 gaskets
950 Holley
MP M1 intake with spacer
Hooker 1 7/8 headers
727 ATI trans,3800 stall, 10 inch converter.
Hughes 594/611  264/268 Solid cam
3 inch exhaust
Dana 60, 35 spline Strange axles 3.54 grear
Superstock Springs, Mickey Thompson ET streets 10.5 inch tire.

All hell broke loose :icon_smile_big:
I used to think the old 440 was fast but there's no comparison to the stroker, spins the tyres in any gear, any time. When I first fitted the Proform carb I slammed my foot down at 70 MPH in top to check for any stumbles and changed lanes in an instant. Scary but great fun.

Anywhere between 10-10.5:1 will be pump gas friendly. I would have the machinist deck the block and set the pistons .005 below deck for a tight quench build. With the .040 head gasket that will give you a nice tight .045 quench distance which helps alot with detonation. You also need to choose the right cam to make it all work well together.

Yep, I am looking to run about 10.3 compression as well for the low octane gas we have around here.

I would definitely deck the block if not for quench reasons alone but just to get consistent CR across all 8 cylinders.  Factory blocks are famous for having different deck heights on each bank!

In my case I had my block decked to get it square and closed the additional height with custom Diamond Pistons.  The pistons are not much more than stock sizes off the shelf but I was able to get a little more compression depth on the piston with the long 7.1" rods.

That's pretty similar to my build, though I don't know the #s on your cam. My engine is getting dynoed on the stand tomorrow afternoon so we'll see what kind of power these 512 strokers can make!

Blakcharger440

Well I ordered my 512 kit plus the billet main caps, main studs and their SFI damper for good measure.  :2thumbs:
