How did you guys restore your bumper jack?

I took a quick look at my recently-acquired bumper jack the other day and got to wondering how some of you guys restored yours. I figured the best way would be to media blast it all, hit it with etching primer or epoxy and then paint the mechanism portion gray. After that dries, tape off the mechanism and jack it all the way up or down and then paint the shaft with silver up close to the mechanism. Let that part dry and then jack the mechanism to the other end and finish the remainder of the shaft.

Or I could try removing the mechanism, paint it in two pieces and then out it back together. Like I said I didn't really look it over that close to see how easy (or difficult) it is to remove the mechanism so maybe that's the best way. What did you do?

I can only guess here because a buddy of mine did it for me as a favor but I think he essentially went with your first idea there Bull.   (I'll ask him next time I see him and wouldn't you know he was here at my place tonight not an hour ago)

If the jack works fine........ do not bother trying to take it apart, that's just a night mare.
Go with your first explanation, I have the correct color paint for the mechanism, but just
don't remember the paint code and name just now, but I used a Rustolium paint, and it
could not be a closer match to the original, I would say it is original   :yesnod:

I did the same, Mine was pitted pretty bad. I sand blasted, used Bondo to fill the pits and primer and clear coat.

Thanks for the input. I think I'll just keep it in one piece and move the machanism up and down to paint the shaft.
