I used to own RM23V0A166154, bought it in SoCal in 1988 and sold it to Dave Kanofsky in 1997.  He Sold it to Dave Schultz in 2002.  Dave had a Rotisserie resto done at HemiTyme, and sold it a few years later.  Just wondering if it has surfaced since.  It is a 440+6 4Speed Black buckets no console that was originally Vitamin C but painted Petty Blue in 1971, and it was repainted Petty Blue when Restored in the early 90s.  It was also a California CAP car with the Emission canister in the trunk.  I'd just like to see current pics of it.

It seems to be in a bunch of my wedding photos, not to mention a few from when each of my sons were born and came home from the hospital :-)

Another give away is that the underside of the trunklid is signed by the late Ray Nichels, Ray Evernham, and Sterling Marlin...

It was a blue plate California car "827 BUP", the plates went with the car when I sold it on Friday, December 13, 2002...that was a tough day, although I was quickly consoled when I bought my Daytona the next day!

It's part of the N95 ECS (emission control system) required on new 1970 model cars registered in California.

My recollection is surface scale.  I didn't know of any pinholes, and certainly no significant rust through.

It's an Evap cannister for the California Emission package. The trunk floor did not need to be replaced IMHO. It could have been saved pretty easily. The car is not supposed to have the chrome exhaust tips either it came with turndowns.

I wrote the current seller and chided them for calling it a Petty Blue car when it was orange originally.  They sent me back telling me that it had been that way since delivery.  I wrote them back and said yes, I know, but as an owner of a REAL 999 car I try to keep track of them and that it may lead to confusion as written.  Nice that they changed it to reflect that!

Its back in Illinois!  My Buddy Joe Moosbichler called me last week and told me it was at Midwest Muscle Cars, so we drove up there to check it out. 
I am perplexed by the restoration, however.  Obviously they kept it Petty Blue instead of the Vitamin C, and they painted the bottom of the car. But thins I noticed like incorrect hardware holding the exhaust hangers on, and details incorrectly finished.  This car was restored by a high end Mopar restoration shop.  They replaced the trunk floor which had nothing more the scaling.  There were not even any pinholes.  The linkage is missing for the reverse lockout from the pistol grip to the steering column.  The body gaps are not perfect, nor is the body perfectly blocked, I am OK with the last 2 because that is the way it was built, but if you are going to do that, why not seal the bottom and just hit it with overspray the way the factory did?  If it were me I would have done the bottom of the car with the orange overspray and then paint the car Petty Blue.  The Suspension pieces are all painted incorrectly which is another Bummer because this car still had the grease pen markings and paint dabs from the production line.  Nevertheless it was nice to see it again, and know its in good hands.









Crazy that the Keychain is still with the car, It was the keychain I got with it when I bought it back in California in 1987...

No, it was absolutely NOT restored by a high end shop.  It was restored by Ken Presley, who goes by the handle Hemi Tyme on the boards.   He really is a full time home builder who happens to restore a few cars for friends on nights and weekends.   He does do VERY nice work.  I believe he did the car the way Dave Schultz wanted it done.

I've seen the car, and it's pretty kick ass gorgeous.  But no way was it a six figure restoration.

The consensus that Joe and I came up with is it looks like it was restored by a Chevy guy.  It looks nice but no where near correct.  It is like it was restored to "Driver" status, but then the floors and wheelwells are painted so you can't drive it?  I would say go one way or the other, it is hit and miss.  It looks good but not right. IMHO it was better as a "Survivor" back when I or Dave Kanofsky owned it.

Don't know how you can call the car driver grade.  It's better than nice enough for most of us.  I'd say it's as good or better than 90 percent of the cars out there for sale.  That last ten percent is the expensive part.

Ken has two Superbirds of his own.  He is no Chevy guy.

I wonder how it ended up at Midwest?  Last I knew it was at Apex in WI...

Edit: AHHH...I was thinking Midwest Car Exchange in Alsip, not the Midwest up in Lake Zurich, which is much closer to WI.

If and when you take a car apart, you TAKE PICTURES, lots of them...!
Its not hard, its the 21st Century...
Everything you find can be copied.
If not copied then its still on FILE...

Certain Folks are removing whole panels to fix a 6 inch square rust hole???
Its not RESTO, its Replacement of major body sections, with badly pressed wobbly recycled washing machines... scratchchin scratchchin scratchchin

A friend of mine restored a 70 Plymouth twenty years ago, and is doing it again because the Taiwanese/Chinese panels rusted out even though they have never seen Wet weather... slap

I was always told by my restorer friend in LA, ''save as much ORIGINAL metal as possible'' especially on the UNIBODY!!! 2thumbs

This Quarter is probably tooo far gone? pity

It was picked up and is being stored / maintained at Midwest in LZ, they had nothing else to do with it.  The current owner is a client of theirs, and has 10+ cars he keeps there and rotates in and out.  It sounds like he does drive them and use them, so that is good news.

The story I got about the car is the previous owner in NY is part of this:

The paint on the car is very nice, and looks good especially to the casual observer, but I obviously know that car inside and out, and I believe if you are going to restore a car that was really a survivor, it should be perfect when finished.

The way it is now, it would s do poorly in a judged concours fhow, as many details are wrong, and it would not do well at a judged show because the panel fit is not perfect, nor are the panels. If it were me and I restored it while leaving it blue I would have painted the bottom grey with orange overspray and undercoating to make it a true day 2 resto.

I don't want to be negative on the restoration. Everybody has their preference. A saw the Orange/Petty car before Dave K owned it and Murph still had it. Always loved the story on how the dealer had to paint it Petty Blue to sell it. Had heard dealers did that, but here was one of those cars. The underneath had the orange paint showing and wax/paint marks. That history (IMHO), and remaining orange paint, made the car so interesting.  I never thought the trunk floor would need to be replaced, super clean underneath - but maybe there was some issue besides rust.
Oh, and BTW Murph, if you had sold it to me and not Dave, I never would have changed your trunk floor! -LOL! (Sorry Dave - j/k).

Found this picture of the car before Dave K owned it. I believe that is in Murphy's storage building. I had my car there also. Bought Murph's Chrysler 300: I should of upgraded to the 'Bird - lol!

Wonderin' where it is now.  Heard it sold later last year, supposedly in the NW 'burbs of Chicago.
