Seeing the flag and trophy reunited with the RaceBird is chilling!

Once again Doug has given me Wing Envy! ;)
wingless now, but still around.

RallyeMike

That the car, trophy, and flag were reunited 40+ years later is pretty cool. Thanks for posting those two photos!

the only thing missing from that reunion, is doug's wallet.

i believe his exact words were "a rough cut 2x4 up my butt".

And somehow, it didn't hurt too bad.    They were not cheap, but I will call it "fair".    When dealing with one of one items, it's tough to negotiate like they do on American Pickers.  :smilielol:

the items are definitely back where they belong.

Kenny Brackett who is an old line wing car guy sent me this garage credential from the '70 ARCA 300.   It arrived last week.    Judy Stott has one like this pinned to her blouse.

Dave, accomplishing this was a big goal.   Ramo won four races in the car, so there were four trophies out there.    Three of them are now back with the car.  The items from Daytona of course, were the big kahunas. They are in all the published photos from back then.

The trophy in the photo below is the actual one from Talladega with the two Racestoppers.   You can see the top of it in that photo.    I got VERY lucky and was able to trade for it last summer.  (I knew who had it, but had not made the effort to chase it down.)     I ran into a man here in my hometown who was visiting for the vintage Indy Car meet we have.    There is a reception at the host hotel.    I walk in and there is nothing going on as it is hotter than blazes on the patio where things are supposed to be happening.   The place is empty.   Well there are two guys with racing hats in the lobby.   I walk up and say hello.   One guy asks if I have a car at the meet?    I answer that I do not have an Indy car, but a stock car.    The guy points to his friend and says, "Well he has a stock car too.    Have you ever heard of Don White from Keokuk Iowa?"     I asked his name and it turned out he was the guy with the Talladega trophy.   I about fell over.    I explained that by luck, I had a pit board that went to his car, and he had the trophy for Ramo's car.   So we swapped.     He took the pit board with him and mailed me back the trophy.   These guys were there just to spectate.   So bumping into them was crazy dumb luck, or karma.

This is the flag from Talladega.   It had been very graciously passed along with the car.   Add water and Racestoppers will appear?

Isn't this misspelled?  Shouldn't it be Vulcan?  And no, I don't mean Mr. Spock.

Aero426

Good catch.   It absolutely is misspelled.     The name of the event was the "Vulcan 500".

In downtown Birmingham, there stands the Vulcan (god of fire and forge) statue, which is the largest cast iron statue in the world.   Cast in Birmingham, it was commissioned for the 1904 Worlds Fair in St Louis.  After the fair, it was returned to Birmingham and reassembled.

In 1969, there was a promotion centered around the rehabiliation of the statue and park grounds. Part of this was Vulcan 500 ARCA race in 1969 and 1970.     The statue is shown on the program cover.
