Best Way To Remove 69 Charger Grille Assembly?

Can the entire assembly be unbolted and removed?  Or does it come out a piece at a time?

Going to a junkyard, so I will be out in the sticks.

Any secrets, or difficult bolts?  Any special fasteners?

Thanks.

Easiest way to do it is to leave the grille attached to the metal header panel. There are 4 bolts up top, 2 on each side by the fenders. There's a lower attachment area also in the center by the lower valance.
The tricky hidden bolts are inside the fenderwells in front of the tires. They are right behind almost where the headlights would be, inside the fenderwells. There should be 2 on each side.
Soak them with WD-40 or similar, since they are actually studs that are part of the header panel & break fairly easily if rusted. You may also want to bring some Bra-kleen and a wire brush if they are coated with undercoating.
Some regular sockets (deep, too), and standard wrenches should be all you need.
Once out of the car as an assembly, you can remove the grille from the header panel.

Trying to remove the plastic sections of the grille while leaving the metal grille frame in the car is enticing.  Just looking at the parts as everything is mounted on the car, it would seem like it wouldn't be too hard.

But I've tried it a couple times and I won't try it again.  You're better off to just removing the entire grille/frame assembly from the car as a chunk.  The plastic stuff is held in place by too many rusty metal fasteners in hard-to-reach places, and the plastic is too valuable to take any chances with anymore.

Looks to me like removing the front bumper first would make it easier for it to come out??   ???

Yes, that & the valance. I did not mention that, but thought it fell under the "obvious" category.  ;)

derfintly have to take the whole metal frame out to get the grill off

Telvis

Take it out as one unit. It's the only way to do it without breaking the grill.

Thanks for all the replies.

You might think I'm crazy  :image_294343: , but I got to thinking those bumper bracket bolts would need an air impact, so I just dragged the whole car out of the woods :smoke: and home..........LOL.  This Charger also has several other salvageable parts.

Grille needs some major repair to the driver side "grille grate" I guess you would call it.  I have an extra headlight cover for the driver's side.
