MECUM AUCTIONS HOUSTON APRIL 9-11 HAS ANOTHER HEMI DAYTONA AUCTION!!

Mopar John

I just read my most recent copy of AUTO WEEK and there is a MECUM AUCTIONS ad with another HEMI DAYTONA going up for auction!
It is scheduled for the Houston auction April 9-11. It looks to be an R4 car with black wing. Maybe the good result from the Welborn
Daytona is going to shake some others loose of their long term owners? Maybe the owner is someone from our site?

i don't know about now, but if i hit the lottery before the auction you can bet the new owner is a member here

I've never owned anything but a MoPar. Can you say that?

Aero426

I believe it is the car from the Brett Torino collection in Las Vegas.   Should be the former Phil Jackson owned car that was once painted blue and yellow.   I will also infer that it is not a numbers matching engine as that is not claimed in the auction listing.

There will be a R-code B5 Supebird there as well from my understanding... I am going to try and make it there. There's also a R4 J-code 4speed Daytona up in the Dallas area. The guy who owned my Daytona is restoring it now. Maybe I should take my Wanna-Be J-code V2 Daytona there......  ;D

Trombinos?   Sounds like a pizza restaurant.      :smilielol:

How old is the restoration on this HEMI DAYTONA?
Do we know what shop did the work?
Is the vin number out there?
MJ

Aero426

I think Julius did the resto and that the car last changed hands "about" ten years ago.

Oh now I've heard of that car. No radio option maybe. Is that possible? Going off memory here. Interesting to see what it goes for. Car is at bottom of this previous thread.

Beautiful Daytona !  Now I get some idea of what my R/T would look like with the wheel covers installed.  My build sheet calls for F70-15 redline tires with the full wheel covers that this Daytona is sporting!

Got the redline tires installed on the original wheels and 4 N.O.S. wheel covers, still in the box and envelopes, waiting to go on the Charger.

This Daytona is beautiful and the factory wheel covers look great.

WOW!  Just realized that the Superbird's VIN is just 2 digits off from mine and is almost the exact same car as mine.  Will be watching this one with special interest.

I'm sure you're aware there are 8 consecutive HEMI 'Birds RM23R0A181254-RM23R0A181261, at least 4 of them are EB5/P6XW/D21 including the "Mr. 5 & 50" racecar.

what's different when compared to your car?

Why would anyone near Appleton, WI paint a HEMI Daytona blue & yellow?  :scratchchin:

SBBob

As far as I know all 8 cars were pretty similar and very basic.  The bucket seat option is about the only major thing on my car.  Here are some pictures of my build sheet and breakdown of the fender tag.  Also sometime ago someone sent me the window sticker for car 181258 also included.  I have talked to Doug and that car is not in the Daytona - Superbird Club's list of registered cars.

I see your fender tag has neither n85 code for tach nor r11 code for am radio. I was vaguely aware that the fender tag did not have a code for a tach-would it have a code if it was radio delete?
thanks
Bob

SBBob

When I got the car it already had and after market AM/FM cassette player in it.  There is a tic tac in the dash.  I do not have the window sticker for my car, but the build sheet is from my car.

Here is a list of the 8 Hemi Superbirds that show up in the final short run of VINs:

VIN      SON
181254   J97205
181255
181256   J97207
181257   J97208
181258   J97209
181259
181260
181261

254 is the car currently listed on Mecum
256 is Superbird Bob's car
257 is the Mr. 5 and 50 car - a car not included in the NASCAR list presumably because it couldn't be counted as a car that was available for sale to the public.
258 was sold to Chrysler and consigned to a regional manager.

I would be very interested to find out if any more of this run of cars were initially used inside Chrysler.
Also, note the fairly low J numbers (low 200s) and the very late production of the cars - all mid December.  This kind of evidence helps me to believe that the configuration (engine/trans/color/etc.) of at least some of the cars was planned out long before they were built.

QUESTION: Do all the 1970 Hemi cars have reference to "Special Headers" on the window sticker.

the "special header" is in reference to the header of the window sticker, it appears anytime the "SHIP TO:" & "SOLD TO:" are NOT the same. As is the case on most if not all "Company Cars".

:scratchchin: how'd the 'Bird comment end up in the Daytona thread?

Arnie Cunningham

Interesting, I wouldn't have guessed that header referred to the paperwork.  Anyone recognize the people listed on the window sticker?  Anyone know what the April date is in reference to?

Redbird

I think this is a particularly interesting "run" of Superbirds too. If more paperwork for these shows up it would shed some more light. Given what we have seen, it would not be surprising to me if the Sox & Martin Superbird was one of this "run" of cars.

I went to Jennings shop in the late 1970's and saw the "5 & 50" car there. Most importantly for me, I believed and continue to believe, that it is a very significant car in the linage of Superbirds.

I never believed for a moment the legend that it was from a NASCAR line of cars. It always seemed to me that it was modified by a racer team as soon as it left the factory. Chrysler and Porsche seemed to be more upfront and honest than some other manufacturers, Mercury and Abarth come to mind here, in regard to actually building the cars they claimed.

I am more of the opinion that the "5 & 50" omission on the list is likely a "secretary's" typo, rather than a specific omission of not being for sale to the public. Conspiracy theories aside, it was just another assembly line car. Maybe destined for some type of corporate delivery as might be the other cars in the "run."

The blue Hemi Superbird sold for $ 480,000.00. Sure looked good up and personal. The Daytona look good too.

no, the drug deal auction Bird last year brought more money

hemi68charger

Here was my day over there... This was my first major auction and it was pretty cool actually....

The Superbird was really nice as well as the Daytona. Funny, a lot of my friends thought it was my Daytona on the block....... Nope, not mine.......

The Daytona had a few obviously wrong things to it to the Mopar-smart... The hood lanyards were wrong, no wheel lip moulding and the buytel ribbon along the wind deflectors on the front windshield. I would think if someone was wishing to fetch Tim-Daytona-sort-of-money those things should have been correct. Wasn't able to really look at either hard for they were behind stanchions when not in line for the block..

Also ran into Rutledge.... Funny thing Danny, he remembered me/us at the burger joint there at Indy during the Brickyard 400...

My sheet is put away for safe keeping, so when I get it out I will see, but sure it is on there.  When I found my car it had a 67 motor in it, so went looking for the correct air cleaner.  Some where in the past (early years of owning the car) a friend showed me an article about the air cleaner and it provided a part number (wish I still had the info).  I had a good friend who ran the parts dept. at the local Dodge dealer.  I took the number to him and he ran it, and it came up that that number was not any good.  The next day he called me with more info.  He had done some research and used the numbers before and after.  Those numbers came up with the base plate and top plate.  He then talked to some one at Chrysler and they informed him the number I gave him was a unit number for the base plate, filter and top plate.  It did not come up for him as it was an in house number only for the complete unit.  The article said to go to the Dodge non fresh air unit.  I have seen some cars with the belt guard and many without it.  Seems to me that the early cars they took the time to go and get it and as they got towards the end the just said oh well and let them out with the fresh air base plate.
