My superbird wing is almost finished.

Don Currie is just about ready to start shipping my parts. This is the steel wing that he's building for my bird clone. He'll be building 5 sets at a time to keep the cost down. He's going to try to keep the cost at $1250 per set for the steel version. That's cheaper than the price I got last month for a quality fiberglass wing. For the vertical stabalizers, he builds a tubular frame and wraps the steel around the frame. The horizontal stabalizer has a square stiffener for strength. The horizontal is adjustable just like the factory wing. His dimensions are from an original wing for accuracy and they weigh almost the same as a factory wing.

At this point he's building the superbird noses, fender extensions, fender scoops, steel hood extensions, wings, wing braces and wing washers with more parts to come later including daytona parts. He's a perfectionist, so you know you'll get nice parts.

Check out his website:

Wow that is some talent.... :o

I would love to try and make parts like that.

Not that it makes much difference, but that has to be somewhat lighter & easier to handle. I know the cast wing from Dane, even in aluminum was pretty damn heavy.

Looks good Larry.  :2thumbs:

I can't even imagine what a solid cast superbird wing would weigh. Would have to be over 100 lbs easy. The steel wings are not easy to make and I hope he doesn't give up on making them. They are very labor intensive. The fiberglass versions can be made in half of the time and probably for less money. Believe it or not the horizontal blade is harder to make than the uprights due to the length and the fact that there is more welding involved and thus a greater chance for warpage from heat.
As for Dane's aluminum wing, I was a little surprised at just how heavy an aluminum piece can be. I wish I had the ability to hollow it out somehow. I still plan to use it on the daytona project, but will definitely have the wing washers and braces in place.

you can't beat Danes wing for the price. i have another cast aluminum wing that i got off ebay. same size as Dane's wing but about 10 lbs lighter. i guess it's the aluminum mix that was used.

There's definitely some heavier alloys other than aluminum in Dane's wings. If it were pure aluminum, it would have to be lighter. Everyone that picks one of the vertical pieces up remarks at how heavy it is.

Dane only does Daytona wings, I asked him about a Superbird one about a month ago.

Don seems to do pretty good work. I have talked to him about a conversion on the phone and he has reasonable prices.

HOW MUCH BODY WORK IS GOING TO TAKE TO FINISH THE SHEETMETAL WING ?

hotrod98

The nice thing about Don's parts is that he will do all of the body work and the wing will be in prime, basically ready for paint.
