Pretty amazing to think that this is what it used to be like.... at least sometimes.
Who in their right mind would say

"The science should not stand in the way of this."? 

Science is just observation and hypothesis.  Policy stands in the way.........

Or maybe it protects us. 

I suppose it depends on the specific case.....

I had nightmares as a teenager that had a smell in them (no other dreams I have had have had smells), and I did not know what that was until I returned to the south side of Chicago and had the smelters (I think) blow in from Gary.  Scared me to death because of the nightmares but had a logical explanation - I was born on the south side and spent my first few years there.  The one memory I have of that time other than the smell, was  getting to listen to my grandparents on the phone because I could barely breathe and that made it difficult to talk - I had a bad reaction as a kid.
