I'm just being curious here, but why do units like the Pertronix and Firecore require so much less physical space than the Mopar ecu?

The original Mopar ECU's were built with old style discrete electronic components on a printed circuit board. These older through hole parts where much larger than today's very small surface mount parts. Look inside your original car radio ( through hole components) and then inside your computer or any other modern electronic device ( surface mount)  and you'll see the difference immediately.

Okay, that makes perfect sense.  I had wondered if the stand alone unit offered any features the internal one did not.
