If you own the car you shouldn't have to pay $1000 ransom to get the fender tag.  If you don't you should have no desire to pay $1000 for another persons tag.

Usually the guys all wrapped up in the "numbers", "date codes", "paint daubs", "build sheets" will and have, or find the coin to pay the "ransom" for a piece of tin with a bunch of numbers stamped on it

Personally I don't understand the reasoning that if I have your tag, buildsheet, why should it be "free" to you?, If I had your "numbers matching" engine, tranny, etc, etc, should I give that to the current owner as well "free" of charge

41husk

Not saying give it away but $1,000?????   If you had a 440 that is a builder and worth $1500  Why would you demand $10k to match it with the car it came from????  Trust me I know the answer,  GREED!!!  Just saying it's a shame.  I have sold cars parts and accessories, and I have sold or given parts for a lot less than they are worth to people in need.  I also believe in Karma :Twocents:

Not all of them are XX29. The tag does have the 925XXX, so its good.

I don't think this is a case of ransom as the guy says the car was crushed. This auction now makes it pretty hard for someone to re-body a car with that tag.

It would sure be nice to know what the full VIN is - there are only a handful of 157XXX cars in the registry and most all of them are unknown.

Just sent the seller a message if he could give me the rest of the numbers on the tag information for the charger 500 registry.

:iagree: There is no obligation on someone to sell or gift a buildsheet or tag to the owner of the car it came off, but why charge so much?? The only reason I believe a buildsheet or fender tag should be given to an owner at minimal or no cost is because these items hold virtually no value to anyone else (other than the owner of the car it belongs with) unless they plan to do something fraudulent with it. Someone paying $1000 who simply wants to 'collect' it, I don't buy that.

A numbers matching engine or tranny on the other hand can be put to good use in another car, but I don't think the price should be pumped up to the guy who owns the car it originally came from.  :Twocents:
"An aggressive exterior with power to match was enough to pull in the performance boys-especially when abetted by a pair of pipes blaring out the back, and brawny red-sidewall rubber hitting the pavement."

If what the seller says is true--(the car was crushed)---how can this tag have any value aside a memento of sorts.
Who would pay high money for this unless their was some potential return?

So the last of the vin is hidden?  Why is that?  I see a long hard risky road for anyone that might use this for financial gain by FAKING a car with it.

The topic of delusional sellers comes to mind. Surfing for a buck from crooks?

I'm glad that posting this sort of thing is a big part of this site. It is what we can do and is of great value to all of us.

i'll wager a dollar that the seller has the dash tag, too. he just can't advertise it.

as stated above, the tag is worthless for any other car. that is not the case for an engine or transmission.

rather than feel a seller in possession of the fender tag deserves a reward for reuniting it with the proper car, one could look at it as him being in possession of stolen property if he removed the tag (as this particular seller claimed). a fender tag DOES belong with, and is unique to, a specific car, and by default should belong to the car's owner.

to ask beyond memorabilia pricing for anything with a vin number, especially for a car you claim was crushed, screams of potential criminal intent

I agree completely.  It is also so blatant that it begs the question about the sellers rational thinking for posting it for sale.

Charger_Fan

Okay fine, but please go & edit your initial post title to say something other than 'chrager'...mmmkay? ;D

The Aquamax...yes, this bike spent 2 nights underwater one weekend. (Not my doing), but it gained the name, and has since become pseudo-famous. :)

RallyeMike

Asking $1000 and getting are two different things. It's his tag, and he can ask what he wants. I doubt it would sell for that, but you never know. I could see someone giving up a couple hundred just to have it.

I have a friend who removed around a hundred tags from Chargers. They don't "belong to the car or the owner" because he was allowed by the junkyard to remove them, the cars have been recycled, and the titles terminated. Without anything to base it on, there is no call for us to be making accusations of stolen property and criminal intent, VIN swapping, or everything else.

I might even offer him something when it doesn't sell just to get the number for the registry and nail it to the garage wall. Will I be criminal if I own it?

had a flash back the other day & been searching  , nothing found as of yet ,  might of been on the old site  :scratchchin:  ,  seem to recall a thread , which spoke about &  showed a picture of a driver side rear quarter ,  from a green C500  , was the whole outer & inner quarter , wheel housing ,  bit of roof & trunk gutter , think mentioned Vin stamping still there too  , cant be sure , story went it was torched off a C500 in a junk yard or before it was sent there  years ago .  :shruggy: :scratchchin: :popcrn:

I will do some more digging and see if I have the vin from trunk gutter.

500Jon

Wow, I hate seeing cut-up rare cars, but a green C500 like mine, its almost criminal!
The clean cut through the window plug, makes it seem slightly more bearable...no not really... :-\

Oh well, that's what Folks did 'back in the day'? :slap:

Your correct, Its hard to see that picture. I think the story went someone wanted a quarter panel for a charger and this is what the yard gave him? I think that is the story. Let me know if I am wrong. Still no info on the numbers on the trunk gutter.

500Jon

Two good things I can see here.
Confirmation of BLACK stripe on F8 green car with 500 position.
Plus the position of the molding clips in the back window.
Bet the SS moldings were tossed away...
I am crying inside, why does this stuff happen? :'( :'( :'(

At least some of the wrecked 'PLUG-CARS' had the plug cut-out whole and probably re-used... :shruggy:

yes  that's jogged my  memory ! that's the story i'm remembering now  , a guy wanted a rear quarter, & that's what was cut off  !  thought sure the picture showed more of the trunk gutter though , was such a long time ago , I could easily be thinking for something else.

while on the subject of F8 C500 chargers , I found on ebay   a year or 2 ago , a guy selling a few small parts from a green C500  he said that was in a field  being stripped for parts , long time ago , anyway one of the  parts was a driver side rear quarter vinyl top moulding ,  yeah ! the C500 had a white vinyl top  , will have a look for the thread  :yesnod:

I remember finding a B5 blue Charger 500 body in a junkyard.
It was a 440 auto console car.
I paid for the body and took off the tag.
When I came back with my trailer the 500 had been crushed!@#$%^&*(!!
I kept the tag and sent it to GG.
He wrote me a nice letter and told me that is was one of 7 500 SE's at that time!

Humor aside--Question--what do you hope for?

Looking for a buyer for this tag is like looking for one person in the world.  (maybe two).

One of those two would be an owner of the car the tag belongs to.

The other would be another like you perhaps that hopes to find and sell to the owner of the car the tag belongs to.--One has to admit that these tags are not works of art.---

Our old car hobby is not like finding flecks of gold in a stream.---The flecks/pieces just don't add up to a car. :Twocents:

Ive never put it on the registry, but if someone wants to by all means have at. The guy i got car from claims car was crushed, but if you read the one post he had bout it when he was selling the car "wasnt for sale" but let let him get parts. My thinking is car still exist he just dont want anyone getting to it. As for price, idk, open to offers. I had intentions on actually trying to track the car down, but in the end even if i found it, and bought and restored it, it would still be a car i wouldnt keep, so im letting it go. Let someone else have the fun or do their whatever. Ill be sending info to Barry Washington so he can mark it in the registries.

Guys, im the one who bought this tag. Did it on a whim lol. The full vin is XS29L9B157524. I kinda wanna sell the tag now, so if anyone is interested?

I'd go $1.00 for it to hang on the wall with all the other 1500 or so fender tags I have from cars that are gone for good.

I have a Charger from Alaska. Wonder if my tag is in there???

You missed this part -

Agreed  :yesnod:
