where does my dipstick go?

Yes, guys the one in my car.  I've heard and seen varying opinions on this, but does my dipstick go between the exhaust manifold and valve cover, or does it go outside manifold between the shock tower and manifold??  69  440  b-body

HP exhaust manifolds? Between manifold and valve cover.  EDIT.. outside..

Thanks for the correction guys... it's where mine has been as long as I can remember back, but I did have headers in '79/80 before putting the manifolds back on in '81. Probably explains why the brand new NOS dip stick tube I bought a couple weeks ago doesn't have enough bend in it to go between!

thanks guys, outside is where it was when I got the car.  But this brings up another question - is the handle engine color or black?  In Genos thread someone mentioned it should be black.  If so, gloss, semi gloss  etc??
