90 amp alternator modifications

Hey Gang...

A friend of mine installed a PowerMaster 90 amp alternator in his '71 Challenger R/T. With the increased amperage, one has to increase the gauge of the wire from the charging post to the battery or starter relay.. I will be leaving the OEM harness in place and running an 8-gauge wire... This will reduce the current load on the original harness. I had intended to by-pass the factory dash amp gauge since this is the weak link in the system. But, if I'm compensating for the addition current with the additional 8-gauge wire from the alternator to the battery, does the amp gauge still take on the additional amperage? If so, for sure I'll be disconnecting/by-passing the amp gauge like I did when I did the amp-2-volt conversion on my '69 Charger. He has an aftermarket amp gauge already that I can use...

Thanks...
Troy

Troy, trust me you can still keep the amm in line wiring everything like factory did. With 90 amps alternator ( able to feed around 50 iddling ) ammeter BARELLY will read any load going through

TRUST ME

ammeter just reads when batt is feeding ( discharge ) or getting feed ( charge ), but while the alt is able to feed the car, the ammeter won't get any load. A good alt save the batt from the game, hence the ammeter
