The body is patched up in places.

The car is not up to modern resto & replica standards.  But it was a nicely done GL for its time.  AFAIK it has never gotten much driving or resto work since then.

Waylon had claimed it was screen used, but it wasn't. It wasn't even built by the same people. The theory that has floated around is WB wanted to give him a nice General Lee, so they had a real shop build him one. Not the usual crews cobbled together props used on the show. My personal thinking is it was built well after Dukes ended. Back when he sold it, he never denied that possibility. The only people that ignored it and maintained it was screen used were the people in charge of getting the maximum money for all the stuff he was liquidating.

Mike DC

Years ago Waylon said that he was overheard remarking that he liked the look of the GLs, and the producers surprised him with one soon afterwards.  Today WB doesn't know anything about it one way or the other.

Maybe Waylon was fibbing and he just had it built himself.  Or maybe one of the TV show producers made a phone call & sent a check to have an independent shop build it, without ever going through studio paperwork.  Or maybe the producers bought him an existing replica.  Nobody knows for sure.  The car has seldom come up for sale and obviously isn't screen-used so there has never been a lot of attention paid to it over the years.

Waylon finally made his only guest-starring appearance in an episode of DOH during the last season.  I'm just theorizing but that might have played a role in causing him to get this car.  Before then he had never been present or involved in the show's production.  (The guy playing the guitar in the opening credits is not really him.)

I think that is the actual truth.

Maybe not in season one, but the others it is him. They chopped his head off because he had a cigarette hanging from his mouth and they had a problem with that., But that was just one take recycled through the years.

Here is a raw image scanned from an uncropped film negative from an actual episode, which still has a bit of his cigarette showing they planned on being cropped out in the broadcast. Beside it a still taken by someone at almost the exact same moment from a slightly different angle.

And I am sure the narrator during the show wasn't Waylon either.

Mike DC

I was thinking of the first-season guitar player when I said that.  From what I've heard that is not Waylon.

It's kind of ridiculous that something like "Dukes of Hazzard" shies away from showing cigarette smoking.  If those characters had been real then probably 3/4ths of them would have smoked.  It's like if the studio had banned alcohol from the Boars Nest.

Brock Lee

They may not have done away with alcohol, but they made it vague. You see some glasses of amber fluid and a "Cold beer" sign..that is it. No hard liquor, no beer bottles or cans. If I walked into a place like the Boars Nest, I would turn around and walk out!

The cigarette smoking was similarly taboo as today. You might see a bad guy nobody wants to be like smoking.. otherwise it was unrealistically non-existent! A few of the actors on that show were even smokers, and it never made it on screen.

What is weird about the rear quarter? Looks normal to me....

Can someone point it out with an arrow? :shruggy:

rebby

Looks like the body lines just aren't as defined on that rear quarter. Could be the picture but it's hard to say for sure without seeing it in person.

Gotta say though, I love a black interior on a GL!

i thought he was

From Wiki:

The theme song "The Good Ol' Boys" was written and performed by Waylon Jennings. He was also "The Balladeer" (as credited), and served as narrator of the show.

If you can see how bad that lower body line behind the rear wheelwell is in a picture, you know it's going to look much, much worse in person.

Brock Lee

I am thinking they may be the first generation quarter skins. One of the Chargers here right now has them. They went on in the early 90's. Same weak central body line, same weird lower line, same somewhat flatter overall look with funky taper going from the wheel well to toward the bumper.

mpd659

Lukedukem,

I was just being a smart a** about Waylon in my earlier post because the person stated that the male playing the guitar on tv was not Waylon.     :coolgleamA:

Agreed.

I don't think those early skins were available in 1979.  I think they were around in the later 80s though.  Not sure.

any decent body Guy , would not have let it go , he would have reworked the lower quarters & or cut the section off & fabricated a new  lower section , to fit & look  correct , IF he knew what he was doing  , not difficult .... with rear quarter repairs like that !! what else is hiding under the shiny paint  ....

Compare:

Looks the same?

Both curved, both have same lines on it... uhm.

Ps: having another look, the lower part of quarter behind rear weel, on yours it curls under the car, the GL doesn't look like it curls under the car, its more like flat or something, straight down... might be angle?

Mytur Binsdirti

Maybe it's the lighting, but the the body line appears to be closer to the marker light on the orange POS in comparison to the 70.

Brock Lee

Its not the lighting. They are the same shit quarters I have. If I had a decent pic, I would post..but I always find creative ways to downplay how retarded they look.

Mike DC

If there is any possible way to screw up a 2nd-gen Charger quarter panel, then amateur bodywork artists (including repro sheetmetal makers) will find it.

charger_mike75

I know this is an old post but i had to say something. When did this car get restored? anybody know? Ive got the magazine article here somewhere and in the article Waylons charger wasn't this nice looking, I remember the engine compartment was green and the A/c hoses weren't even there, the body on his looked really good but I want to even say it had a green interior. I gotta dig that mag out and look again.

Bad B-rad

That maybe why the engine bay is now BLACK instead of body color(orange)or green, and maybe why inside is also black and not DOH tan, I guess painting it black is better then green

All I know is that Waylon was one of the last of the "Good 'Ole Boys.  Loved his music.

CornDogsCharger

Here are a few pictures of Waylon's General from the 90's.  As you can see, the interior is black as well as the engine bay.  The body lines do not look as bad as they do now.  Also, if you look carefully, you can see the sail panel seam starting to bubble up.  If I had to guess, I would say that the car was repainted recently and the interior was dyed black again.  Notice the headrest ring in the earlier picture is still silver/chrome... now it has been painted black.

Even though the body lines do look round and strange owning this General should make anyone proud. Owning both a piece of DOH and something personal of Waylon's is pretty cool in my opinion.
