changing ring and pinion and keeping Sure Grip

Rear end is an 8 3/4. 742 case, with 4:89 gearing and Sure Grip. The 4:89 gearing is too much for normal street driving and the ring/pinion are worn. It whines like crazy once you get up around 25 MPH or more.

Can the ring and pinion be changed out to 3:55 gearing while at the same time keeping and using the sure grip that is in there currently?

I hope that isn't a dumb question with an obvious answer, although I feel it is lol. I'm learning and educating myself however sometimes you just need to ask when you can't find the answer on your own.

Dr Diff is a good place to start.    :Twocents:

Or you can buy the gears themselves and a rebuild kit and do it yourself.

Thanks guys.

I don't believe I need a whole new third member. I think changing out the worn ring and pinion for new will make a world of difference. Being able to change to 3:55 gearing will be a blessing too.

And not having to purchase a new sure grip unit helps too.

Unlike some other rear ends, the 8 3/4" doesn't use different main cases or different differentials for the same pinion size gear set....so any 1 3/4" pinion gear set will fit your existing 742 case.

Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.
