For the diehard fan, here's the actual pages of the August 1970 issue of Stock Car Racing Magazine's coverage of the Alabama 500, at Talladega, which was won by Pete Hamilton in the Petty SuperBird. This was the first race where all the side glass was banned, slowing the cars way down under the 200 mph barrier.   Lee Roy Yarbrough came closest , running 199.1 leading a draft early in the race before the track was greasy.   As you know, drafting would add 3-4 mph to the speed of a pair of cars running together versus a car on it's own.

This is the April 12, 1970 Alabama 500.   The Talladega 500 was later in the year.   Doesn't matter much as Pete won both.   First race on the new Goodyear slicks.

Tires were tested the previous month.   2thumbs
First race without the side glass option, too.

If Isaac qualified at 199.6 with no side glass, he certainly would have been over 200 with glass.  That was a big dog run.

First "race" without side glass.  You could qualify with side glass...  Later was banned totally!

Anybody know what really happened to the original #40 Hamilton Bird?  shruggy
Supposedly, went to the West Coast, made the rounds over the years on short tracks.

I love all these old magazine articles. I'd start a collection if importing them wasn't so expensive

Actually, the article is very well written.  Lot's of good details, like who built Bobby Allison's engines!
