Looking for a carburetor for my 69 hp 440
Just had my 440 recently rebuilt and looking for a carburetor for it
Stockish build
Sig earson cam 110 cl
Was told to use a holley 650 double pumper with mechanical secondaries
Im no gear head so when i search for this i get a bunch of different setups and im super indecisive so if someone can give a part number and the right place to get it that would be great

Edelbrock carbs can be a problem on 440's especially if your cam is a little bigger than stock. Do a search for "Edelbrock off idle dead spot". Holly or Demon would be my recommendation. There are many other good choices for a 440, but Edelbrock is not one of them.

The 750 proform recommended above would also be my choice. The 650 holley would work also but a little too small for a 440 really, no room for mods down the road. the 750 proform mechanical secondary is a good mid level carb which is highly tuneable and would work great on a stock or mildly modified 440 once dialed in.

Thanks OP. I had a similar question. Just finished tearing apart my Holley 650 double pumper. It will need a rebuild kit, but I might hold off and just purchase a new one since this is my first car project and getting stuck with a small carburetor problem isn't something I want to deal with.

Isn't 750cfm the stock carb size for a 440 Carter AVS?

I thought the unpublished numbers on the Carters ran around 620-650cfm?

I think Carter AVS carbs used on 440HP motors had 1-11/66" throttle bores, with 1-7/16" pri. and 1-9/16" sec. venturis.  Just going on that, Holley's range from 750cfm to 770cfm with venturis smaller than the Carter, to 830cfm for those with 1-9/16" vanturis on both primary and secondary bores.  Can the Carter really be down at 620cfm with the same size bore and venturi?

Carter AVS on 1968 - 1971 440 HP had 1 11/16" Primary - 1 11/16" Secondary Throttle Plates
750 cfm

Carter AVS on 340 / 383 had 1 7/16" Primary - 1 11/16" Secondary Throttle Plates
630 cfm

AVS #4966 found on Standard 440 Motors used 630 cfm



Another great option is the Edelbrock 800 cfm AVS Carb
I just installed a few of these on some friends 440 cars , both where running Edelbrock #1407 750 cfm Carbs prior

They say night and day performance differences , no more off idle stumble , great plug color out of the box , didn't even rejet or change metering rods yet

Both couldn't be happier

And I have nothing against Holley
