Hi

In the near future, I'm in the market to be another Muscle Car and I'm having an issue deciding on the next purchase (good problem to have).

I understand that this post is "strange" as car preference and taste is extremely subjective, but I am new to MOPAR's and wanting the "best bang for my bucks".
My spend is up to $70us (with some wiggle room)

I'm leaning towards:
Super bee A12 (would look great sitting next to my 6pk Bird :) )
Most things 6 pack and 4 speed (69/71)
69 Mercury Cyclone CJ, 4 speed (with change $)
70 Torino CJ, 4 speed (with change $)
Pantera De Tomaso (but I'm 6ft 6" so maybe an issue)

Maybe I need a change and go for a classic? or 33-34 Ford Couple nostalgic Salt flat race, as I am spoilt on Muscle cars (oh boy I'm confused :0)

Anyway, what are your thoughts, what would your direction be
NEW ZEALAND (aka Paradise)
1973 De Tomaso Pantera GTS widebody
1970 Superbird, 6pack, 4 speed, Tor-Red, Buckets, restored by Julius
1970 428 Cobra Jet, 4 speed, calypso Coral, white shaker
1970 Boss 429 KK2457, Concours, Calypso Coral (SOLD)
1957 Chevy truck, big rear window, ocean green, STOCK!.....nice!

F8-4life

My opinion, stay clear of high dollar collector fords. You already have a b body mopar, so the pantara sounds cool...
Can't go wrong with any factory v code 4 sp car..especially a charger.
Maybe you should consider buying two $35k cars?

F8-4life

If your into 50's chrome era stuff I recommend a 57-60 chrysler product...I think they are under-rated & on the rise value-wise, and they look fantastic.

I like 2 x $35K option

70 or 71 Challenger convertible with the highest line motor and trans you can get....
68 Charger 383 HP grandma car (the orignal 3X)

If it was me, I'd look for something like a 65/66/67 Hemi Coronet/ Charger or Plymouth Satellite.   They're not as popular as the 68-71 cars but yet have the performance.

JR

That is a healthy budget to work with. I'm going to assume you want something unique, with strong investment potential, that could appreciate under your ownership.

So, I'm gonna play the Wild card and vote Jensen Interceptor.

Those came from the factory powered by Mopar big blocks.

My second choice will be an imported Ford Falcon XB. The Mad Mad car. They've appreciated significantly the last decade, but should still be in budget.

Another wildcard sure to appreciate. Since you're open to Italian V8 powered cars, maybe an Alfa Romeo Montreal. These run between 65-150k, but what a beautiful GT car. Built from 72-78 I believe.

And my last suggestion, if you want something more traditional, I vote for a 70 Torino with hidden headlights and a 351 4 speed:

Or a 71 Road Runner/GTX. These are under appreciated.

If you like Pantera's then I'd Suggest you get yourself a Mangusta. LEON.

Unfortuately, there are many here who believe that rotted out, wrecked, and stripped Dodge Chargers and turning them into GL clones or race cars is a wise investment and I would be wary of seeking that the advice you seek from here. Your budget will afford you something  very nice and  whatever you decide to pursue, you owe it to  yourself to properly research it. Now, I'm not trying to disparage any of the previous posters and what they have suggested, rather I'm just saying. Good luck in your search.

If you want a Mopar then I would say 70-71 e body.    If you are looking for a fun investment then I personally think the 80s and early 90s super cars are headed up in value.   I would love to have a Ferrari or Lamborghini from this era, with their over done styling.   :eek2:   As an investment, I'm not sure muscle cars are a good investment.  I feel like we may be close to the peak on values and in coming years they will start to slowly drop.   :shruggy:   But, who knows, if I knew the future then I would be on wall street.    :yesnod:

Instead of a Cyclone CJ, you could buy a very nice '69 Spoiler II to go with your Superbird and have a bunch of cash left for your second choice.

Many of us like seeing raggedy old Chargers saved.  Whether we think it's a smart financial investment is a totally different question.

Having kids is damn near financial suicide.

But we don't say "You dumbass!" when somebody posts a pic of their newborn.

Can't imagine there are many Interceptors over there.....hard enough to find them over here. I looked at one a while back but it was a category B write off so could not be put back on the road....pity as it was a very rare car and imo not beyond saving. If you go for one try and find an FF model...rarer still and one of the first four wheel drive vehicles not built to go off road.
If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you !!

JR

Alfaitalia, the OPs profile says he's in New Zealand. So I'm assuming he is still there.

I know Falcons are rare and expensive, but if I had a 70k budget and lived on that side of the world I'd give it a shot!

The Xa and Xc falcons are pretty cool too. I could settle for one of those.

But with his 70k budget, he can certainly find something really cool.

Edit Crap, I thought you were referring to the Ford.

Jensens are rare in the U.S., but he should be able to find one in budget.

For example.

Since you do like them Ferds, my vote also goes to a Pantera. Ford powered, an exotic that couldn't be easier.
Except 70 is about the starting price for a light resto, might be 20 light on finding a done one.
Two rules: get a split chrome bumper and don't take the one I want!

If 6'-6" is a criteria, you might want to stick with badges that say "Navistar" or "Mack" ;)

I strongly disagree. Not every rusted out wreck should or needs to be saved and brought back. The hobby does need parts cars, not resurrected rust buckets; some of which are poorly resurrcted. The guy who brought this to Carlisle is honest, sane and a good sense of humor. However, if this fugitive from the crusher was a 68-70 Charger, many here would be salivating over it and there is absolutely no doubt that someone would pay thousands for the chance to own a bottomless money pit.

RCCDrew

Sounds like you want an investment, mostly because the value of the car is more important than the type. The trick is to find the car that will appreciate the most in the time you choose to own it.
930 Porsche? 78 Trans Am?

You don't have to restore rustbuckets if you don't want to.  Nobody will criticize you for trying to avoid a money-pit car.  We generally call that a smart thing to do.

Some of us are just more okay with dumping too much money into our projects, for various reasons.  It's not immoral or unethical to do that by choice.  These things are hobbies.  (Some people drop thousands of dollars per year at a casino.  I don't get it but it's their choice.)

When we see another member voluntarily fixing a not-worthy rustbucket, we praise him because it's sort of like "taking one for the team".   It helps keep the supply of Chargers higher than strict investment sense would allow for.  The only reason most of these cars still exist is because a lot of money has been lost on them in the last 50 years.

Too funny, what Mike and Mytur are at--and both full of contradiction--wh/ is why Mike gets it. "Suffice to say, what we behold is censored by our eyes. To be possessed is the best reason for possessing." When my wife's boss asked me why the car, I said (honestly) cuz I needed sumthin to paint. Do I paint cars? No...Do I want it to keep its value AND cheer and follow every one that's saved? Yes...Yada yada yada. In no wise is this (or anything really) "sensible." Kids...That was a good one. "The forms of things unknown, the poet's pen. Turns them to shapes and gives to airy nothing. A local habitation and a name. Such tricks hath strong imagination," Lotsa majik bein done here.

Agree.  66/67 Hemi Chargers, when they actually sell (as opposed to high price listing), have sold in 60s range (Tim Wellborn collection car at Mecum auction)

To make sense of it, and pardoning Alfa's vestigial (colonial?) habit of the royal we and tendency to speak for everyone ("absolutely no one else!"?), I was simply putting our lunacy on the right side of Shakespeare. I'll take my 40 lashes at Bertha's House of Pain.

That sure likes the one i sold 15 years ago. Dont recall the VIN and was in Canada. But whats the odds of another fm3 340 4 speed rotted to hell painted lime green. The white writing on the quarter wasnt there and not quite as rusty. Had a donor car to resurrect it, but came to senses and realized it was just an A body lol
