The era of "win on Sunday, sell on Monday" was never stronger than in the 1960s, when manufacturers from all brands pulled out their big guns for racing homologation. Though drag racing and the Trans-Am series were part of this, truly outrageous cars like the Dodge Charger Daytona were destined for superspeedway stock-car action. To meet that requirement, the company created a near-minimum 503 units—500 were required for racing legality—and this refreshed Daytona has some very attractive options in addition to its noteworthy aerodynamics. The Charger R/T was the brand's premier mid-size model, and these cars were then converted by a Chrysler contractor using a pointed nose, flush-mounted rear glass and tall deck wing. This 1969 Dodge Daytona has been subject to a nut-and-bolt rotisserie rebuilding to correct factory specs, which have been documented through both the original broadcast sheet and window sticker. Sold new at Western Dodge, Inc., in Marion, Indiana, the car features its matching-numbers 440 Magnum engine, the 375 HP design with a 4-barrel carburetor and dual exhaust standard to R/T models. Built with the A36 Performance Axle driveline, behind it is an A727 TorqueFlite transmission and 8.75 Sure Grip differential with 3.55:1 gears. Like all R/T models, it features performance suspension pieces, and this car has power steering as well. The Daytona may have already been striking in appearance, but in this case, it is painted R6 Red with a white wing and black vinyl interior. Inside are bucket seats, a center console with shifter, Music Master AM radio, sport-type steering wheel, tachometer with clock, remote driver's mirror and tinted windshield. Unlike the later Plymouth Road Runner Superbirds, Charger Daytonas were all very nicely equipped with standard R/T components. The perfecting touch here is styled road wheels and redline tires that accent the body color. Charger Daytonas will always be unique. This one is exceptionally beautiful and has the pedigree and professional quality that will create interest in any setting.
