Before I "correct" this, just want to make sure that the Super Birds followed the assembly line routine when sent up the street for assembly with Coronet fenders and nose.

Did they black out the fender hole location and use a bare black phosphate bolt like I did during my Bee restoration or did it all just get painted body colour?

TIA!

Good question! I'm patiently awaiting responses as well...Moparjohn???  :popcrn:

During the OE judging of our Superbird at Carlisle in 2016 we received a deduction for this item!
I have attached a picture of this area on the Superbird.
The shop undercoated this tab and bolt head/washer after it was painted with the rest of the wheelhouse.
I'm told a sloppy brush coat of black paint on the tab and bolt head/washer is proper for Superbirds.
I have a problem with this because my 1970 GTX drag car is still original
and has the undercoating method on it.
You can even see the undercoat splatter on the wheel opening molding!
That is my second attachment.
So it must be a plant to plant thing?

Thanks John for your insight!!!  :2thumbs: Maybe if the guy with the paint brush missed or was sick that day the undercoating guy hid his absence!  :yesnod:

Anyone else have opinions or facts on this matter??  :shruggy:

I just want to make sure I'm clear on this.
The 1970 GTX was one of the first cars built for the model year at the St. Louis plant.
It was built on the second day of production Tuesday August the 6th.
So an early build from a different plant could be the difference?
Like my air six barrel air cleaner instructions post we need more original examples.

Hi, I just checked my bird and the bolt on the passenger side looks like it has undercoating on half of the washer and not the bolt.  The bolt on the driver side has no undercoating. They are both black phosphate bolt and washer and no paint.     :popcrn: :Twocents:

All the Birds were made on Lynch Road John !

talkie... bolt is no paint, is the tab brush painted black or body colour on your car???

Thanks!

From what I noticed over the years restoring these is even if they are suppose to be done a certain way as a TBS may tell you they are not always done in a consistant manner & can vary. I always say if your car is all original when or before you start restoring it then how ever it was done from the factory is the right way even if they did it wrong. People have questioned this before, if my car was done wrong at the factory, should I correct it when restoring it? Opinions will vary on this? LEON.

My car has been repainted Leon.. why I'm asking what they did up the street from Lynch road when they converted these old Road Runners...

The fender tab is body color. I took the bolt out and it came out easy after 49 years in there to get a good look. :popcrn: :drool5:  Rick.

THANKS Talkie... what I suspected might have been the case seeing the fenders weren't assembled on the Lynch line but painted to match the car and then bolted in place at the assembly facility down the road. Of course that would then bring up the next set of bolts.. fender to inner fender. How did those get painted body colour after the fact??

When a car has been repainted then I guess you gotta do research & go with the majority which you are doing. There has been times a judge will deduct a point saying it's not right when the owner knows it is because it was a low mile well preserved original unrestored survivor before the restoration. it can even be documented with pictures/proof & still be debated.
