I have been told a million different answers to this by a million different people. What's the truth?? Please if anyone knows who I need to talk to or where I can find the answer please help. How many 68 225 cyl 3 speeds were made. As of now I hear out of the 906 made 4 were this configuration. Thanks in advance

6bblgt

per WARD's AUTOMOTIVE ANNUAL 96,108 1968 Charger were built:

~2,306 ( 2.4% ) were 3-speed manual (225 & 318)
~6,920 ( 7.2% ) were 4-speed manual (383 2bbl, 383 4bbl, 440HP & 426 HEMI)
~86,882 ( 90.4% ) were automatic (225, 318, 383 2bbl, 383 4bbl, 440HP & 426 HEMI)

the automatic transmission was ~$200 OPTION
- the 3-speed manual transmission Chargers are rare, but they were also the quickest to the junkyard - just cheap transportation

is there a source for the single digit 3-speed manual transmission numbers besides GG? (& his books show "KNOWN" by him)

I had one, biggest disappointment to drive. Sold it to a friend who thought it would be cool and now he's tired of it and want to get rid of it

Ya, I might be up for one of those as well.
You know you are vintage when someone says, "Back in the day", and you can dispute their facts.

Well since that video it's had some work done, passenger front floor patch, new carpet, installed missing interior items it was missing, new water pump, new clutch, new idler arm, roll pin in shifter lever. It's a good driver, just be prepared to travel in slow motion.

F8-4life

I find it hard to believe they only made one or four units with the slant/3 speed stick combo.
That sounds like some BS some owner made up to sell his car.

I'd bet more than 50% of the 900+ /6 1968 Chargers were manual 3-speed equipped

and ~10% of the /6 1968 Chargers that survive are manual 3-speed equipped ( :Twocents: it is the survival that is RARE, not the original production)

for some reason the available (GG) '68 3-speed & 4-speed manual transmission Charger numbers are NOT accurate

anyone with a "newspaper archive" search account could look for vintage ads with posted "XP29B8" VINs & see if they list transmission  :popcrn:

for comparison - the '69 Charger numbers show ~462 /6 Chargers (~262 with 3-speed manual (~57%) & ~200 with automatic (~43%)) - those didn't survive in large numbers either
and not to be left out - the '70 Charger numbers show ~181 /6 Chargers (~104 with 3-speed manual (~57%) & ~77 with automatic (~43%)) - those didn't survive in large numbers either

Well since it has the R/T badges on it already it would be cool to toss in a 440 and call it a day. Keep the 6 on a crate and tuck it away in the garage lol. Looks like a nice daily.

My very first Charger I bought was a 68
Did not know how to decode stuff then but later on figured out it was originally a 6 cyl car ( auto as there was no floor hump for standard shift or extra clutch pedal)
It had a 440 with it when I got it

I would imagine that is what happened to most of them

Those above numbers are for the XH29s (Charger base models), not including the XP29s (Charger 500 models) for that year (1970).  There are 29 XP29 /6 Chargers that year, including a 1 of 1 500 SE /6 version (build sheet was found, but not the car yet).  That information comes from the 1970 Charger Registry site...

I have one of the 104 XH29 3-speed manuals for that year in my set....

My 68 was also a slant 6 auto by its numbers. It had already been 440ized when I got it. It is now a 426 street wedge with a 69 six pack setup.
1970 Superbird Tribute 440 auto
1968 Charger 426 6 pack auto
1971 Chevelle SS Tribute 350 4 speed
1970 Mustang 351 C 4 speed
1969 GTO 400 Ram air III 4 speed
1972 Charger (soon 5.7 hemi auto)
1973 Charger 440 auto (U code)

I watched the youtube video and looked like a 8-3/4 in the rear which is strange because they came out with 7.25 I believe. anyone else have info on that.

Kern Dog

I don't think that the 7 1/4" axle was ever used with a B body that had a manual transmission.

In 68 the 8-3/4 was commonly used for even 318 cars

Who in their right mind would say

"The science should not stand in the way of this."?

Science is just observation and hypothesis.  Policy stands in the way.........

Or maybe it protects us.

I suppose it depends on the specific case.....

krops cars

I had a transmission, and column for a 1970 3 speed. I almost gave it away.
