My friend got a broken foot when the torqueflight exploded in his ten second first gen Charger, he runs a trans blanket now. It split the seam of the floor wide open where the trans tunnel meets the firewall.

I see the driveshaft did the damage here, but I've been running a Lakewood scatter shield on my Bee since 1979... installed about 3 weeks after my then GF's brother lost his right foot when the clutch / flywheel assembly exploded in his '68 GTO.

This is why i run an sfi flywheel, full trans blanket, 2 shaft loops, and have the tunnel and drivers floor pan made out of heavy steel. Been there, witnessed it 1st hand.

I saw  69 Z/28 that the guy blew the clutch, and the assembly came through the floor, went through the dashboard like a buzzsaw, and caught the top of the windshield frame peeling back the roofskin of the car.

Unreal, and given al his safety measures, it still happened. Sorry to see.

Anyone that has ever replaced a floor pan or inner fender knows just how thin that stuff is. It works fine for strength but it offers very little protection from shrapnel.

what KD said  :iagree:

seen that type of thing before at the drag strip,  scary stuff

had a front drive shaft UJ break on a daily driver 4x4 , 25  years ago at about 60mph top of second gear  manual trans  ! put a nice dent & poked a tiny hole in the trans tunnel ,
nother time about 30 years ago   another daily driver  front uj let go  accelerating hard at about 80 as the  trans shifted in the 3rd , that was scary ! your automatic reaction was to put in it neutral to save further damage  :yesnod: ,  hoping the noise &  banging went away ! but no !  drive shaft still connected to axle

That was hard to watch.

I run more safety equipment than required by the rules. You can't install it at the time you need it!

Thanks also for posting this.  Though sobering, it is very valuable to see, and know what can happen.
Who in their right mind would say

"The science should not stand in the way of this."?

Science is just observation and hypothesis.  Policy stands in the way.........

Or maybe it protects us.

I suppose it depends on the specific case.....
