Anyone know this bird that now resides (for sale) in Australia (5 miles from me)? I saw it at the Mopar Sunday show a year or so ago. Been for sale for a couple years I think. How can you tell a real one from the VIN & fender tags etc? I would love a bird but $295K is up there. What would something similar sell for in the states?

The numbers check out, to be a real superbird, according to the fender tag. Everything you need to know is here, on this link:

https://aerowarriors.com/sftd.html

I have no idea about the prices in your country, but I've got to believe it's pretty rare to find one for sale down there. In my opinion, although it is a 6 bbl car, more desirable than a 4 bbl 440, it is quite high in price. Details I noticed from the few pictures are incorrectly colored jack pieces, and a totally missing, impossible to find, front scissors jack assembly. Gauges appear original and are yellowed. There's no good pictures of the engine to see what's right and wrong (if you are looking for stock original) and if the engine and transmission numbers match the VIN and fender tag for starters. As you know, original drivetrain commands a much better price than a replacement engine and/or trans.

There are many more knowledgeable people on this site that can give their opinion. I've only owned two birds in my lifetime. That's the extent of my "expertise".

loudmouthaussie

Thanks for your reply Sgt Superbird  :icon_smile_big:

Yes you're right, this would be the only superbird for sale downunder at the moment. Not many mopar guys have nearly 300K to spend on a car tho im guessing.

Thanks for the link. All those numbers check out.

Just doing some sunday dreaming on maybe a trade deal with my 70 charger + cash  ::)

The seats are correct (deluxe trim), as is the dash and gauges. The car is a bench seat automatic, so you get the column shift without a console. It appears to be an original AM radio, too.

Good luck! The car doesn't look bad at all.

loudmouthaussie

Thanks. Yeah after I decoded it all I realised the difference in the seats was bench and bucket.

Great car, but man that price tag. From what I've seen googling American prices, this would be around the $150K mark.

For a 6 bbl car, $150K might just be slightly low, but again, it depends on the condition and original drivetrain. One thing else to consider is if the nose is steel or a replacement fibreglass item. Just throwing things out.

loudmouthaussie

Thanks for the link. That seller is based about 1000 miles further south from me. Perhaps they're trying to sell the same car on consignment for the owner up here.

Being an recent importer of a Superbird to New Zealand (Similar, but AU has luxury tax), the asking price in AU dollars, works out to be approx. $140US, once you consider, currency, tax, shipping etc.
Not bad buying. You could NOT import that V code for that price IMO

yeah I know. with duty, GST shipping etc. $295K is probably them not making a lot unless they bought when $ was @ parity. I have a feeling this was sold out of Victoria a few years back. Advertised in both Qld and Vic currently - Strange. These things are perhaps normal when dealing in 300K cars though.

Might go have a look this week.

1. Where exactly on the 727 trans is the VIN sequence stamped? I've looked on my 70 Charger and cant really see much...

2. Is the VIN sequence stamped on radiator support panel as per B body Charger? I've read somewhere Plymouth B bodies don't have it in that position?

Obviously I'll check inside trunk lip and oil pan rail on the 440.

Thanks in advance for any help

Passenger side of the bell  housing, look for a flat pad.

My pal's bird here locally has the partial VIN stamp, it was under the coolant sticker on his, but there is so exact spot on each car for the stamp of the sticker. Locations vary car to car.

If you are not sure what to look for as far as original stamps go, you can take photos and post them here.

I have seen quite a few birds without the vin on the core support, including mine ! :scratchchin:

With the conversion to USDs it looks like a decent buy. Some things I noticed, chrome valve covers- unpainted master cylinder lid- repop and or incorrectly painted wheels- bucket seat interior door panels- electrical concern with the noticeable lighting issue.
wingless now, but still around.

loudmouthaussie

thanks for feedback. hadn't even noticed the door trims. looks like original in rear and replaced the door trims. I did a quick search on classic industries. they don't seem to sell the bench seat silver trimmed ones. Maybe that's why the bucket ones used.

Talked to guy that imported the car into australia back in 2010.
Guy who inspected the car in Cali said it was matching numbers, which turned out to not be true.
So my question is this;
Whats a realistic price in the states for a non numbers, genuine v-code bird? Fibreglass nosecone, missing scissor jack that needs a few mechanicals sorted?
150k?

Glass nose,
IMO I doubt it would bring $150k in the states , But I could be wrong

Claims the engine cast dates seemed to be a few months newer than the cars build date. Im not sure if he found any sequence stamps anywhere. I had a look on radiator support but couldnt see anything. There was a thin foam sheet there hiding anything anyway.

I agree, that price is a little high, for a car without the original drivetrain and a fibreglass nose. I think the first thing to do would be to get down to the truth about whether the car is numbers matching or not. You have no doubt realized you're going to pay a premium for a car in your location, cuz there aren't very many birds there, I'm sure!

True, the prices in the eBay link are all over the place BUT, most of them have been listed for a looooong time. Asking price and selling price are two different things

Well, 2 months later and it's in my garage!  :icon_smile_big: Very happy. Swapped my 70 charger 500 + cash. Scored it at a goodish price (100k lower than what it would've cost to import from USA). Turned out it was all numbers matching with just a few things to correct/live with  :2thumbs: Have original sales documents, broadcast sheet etc. Sold new in Greenville, SC  '71.

How great is that? (Spending your kids' inheritance, I see!) It's 1:40 a.m. local time and I'm up. The absolute strangest thing just happened: one of my four kids just texted me "I miss your Superbird". What's so strange about it is that we don't talk much at all, but it's been getting better the last year. He was referring to the bird I owned 1990-2001. I texted him a picture of my current bird, and he didn't know I had replaced it with this other one, and wanted to know the story behind it. Very strange; I'm happy he reached out.
