I can clearly remember watching this race live on TV the day it happened,  but the footage seemed to have disappeared until now.  It's just a couple of week past the 50th anniversary of this race.

Check the model cars shown at 6:00 into the video - Does anybody know where they would have gotten the plastic models of the wingcars and Aero Fords in April 1970?  I don't recall anything like that available at the time, I would have  blown my allowance on them I could have found them!

Interesting how many of the drivers are now gone, particularly in recent years - Pete Hamilton, Buddy Baker, David Pearson, etc just to name a few.

Very cool, thanks for posting.  :2thumbs:

Found it interesting that when the pit reporter asks Cotton Owens the fastest speed Buddy Baker ran in his #6 Daytona, he stated 199.

When Baker exploded, it looks like the left fender scoop was either blown off or burned off by the fire.

During the broadcast it was mentioned that Yarbrough ran the fastest race lap, early in the race. (lap 20?)
One would assume it was in a draft at that point.

I've never owned anything but a MoPar. Can you say that?

It's great that this and other NASCAR races from that time period are on YouTube. With racing shutdown now I've been watching the old races again, nice to not see a toileta in the bunch!
Back when a few good ole boys could get together and build up a car to compete with the top names at the time. Also it was cool to see what the factories were coming up with engineering wise to compete with each other. Drag racing was the same way then too. "Win on Sunday, sell on Monday"
My favorites were Bobby Isaac and Richard Petty. They both had a driving style that was unique, if all the cars had been white you could've picked them out by driving style alone!

That is exactly in line with what was reported in Stock Car Racing magazine in the race report.     Close, but not over 200.

During the interview in the pits with Bobby Allison after he dropped out of the race, Bob Montgomery asks him about running without side windows.
Bobby Allison makes a comment about "all the garbage blowing around in the car".  Why am I not surprised?
