I have a '68 383/4 that has mostly complete original A/C (just missing the compressor).  The car has been off the road since 88 and I wonder what the latest offerings are for replacing the original system with an aftermarket one?  I just wonder how they compare cost wise to restoring the original equipment and if a lot of alteration to the car is needed.  Opinions?  Facts?  Wild assumptions?

I have the Sanden Compressor & a direct fit r134 condenser , with a rebuilt factory ac/heater box, it works AWESOME

Short version:

Keep the original HVAC box under the dashboard.  It's a better end result because it was built just for that make & model.  The aftermarket HVAC dash boxes are somewhat under-sized for the job and they can only recirculate inside air.

Use updated stuff under the hood, at least for the compressor.  The newer ones are more light/compact and draw less power than the originals.  It also lends itself to R134a freon so you don't have to chase down sources of R12.

Something like CDR will work fine.  If you want a system already speced out, just call these guys.  They can sell you exactly what you need for under the hood retrofit.  I think you need to call and talk to them to make sure you get the right stuff, too hard to pick from their catalog.

What Mike DC said.  The factory system is well engineered.  It's also somewhat complicated, and requires attention to detail.  But having fresh air is much better than the aftermarket systems, better defrost with reheat and dehumidification in the winter via the compressor time delay.  The firewall heater control valve will need a new seal, the three way valve inside the box will need new hose spool pieces.  All of which can be found.  Not for the faint of heart, or should I say wallet.   :o
