My 16-year old son just asked me if he could drive my car to a party just a few miles from the house this coming Friday night. Any guesses as to my answer on that one?

XH29N0G

Well you are the father; so my guess is that you said no.

When I was a kid, I waited for my parents to go out to dinner (it wasn't really planned that way, but they were away) and then asked my grandpa to take the charger for a spin.  My friends and I found out how fast the car would go in reverse!  My parents were not happy when they found out upon their return.....
Who in their right mind would say

"The science should not stand in the way of this."?

Science is just observation and hypothesis.  Policy stands in the way.........

Or maybe it protects us.

I suppose it depends on the specific case.....

XH29NOG: You are correct Sir. I did, however, offer to let him drive it down to the gathering with me as a passenger and then go get him with it later.

XH29N0G

My Dad would have done the same.

It sounds like the kid needs a muscle car project of his own.

All in good time. His '60 Dart project has been fairly consuming in terms of both time and money (for us both). My first muscle car came when I was 20-years old. That '70 Roadrunner was a gigantic lesson in both economics and self-preservation. Depending on how the future unfolds in this country (after the pending election), his lessons in all that will likely happen as well. Either with something more muscular or with something more "green".

I remember it like it was yesterday. I was 16 and trying to convince my dad to let me take his truck to school to do a repair on the door in shop class. He wouldn't let me. He said if anything he'd take the door off and let me take it in. I was upset at the time, but now I'm the same age he was back then. He made the right decision, and I'm glad he never let me take. I had every intention of bagging on that thing and laying down some serious rubber.

My kids were brought up around muscle cars and motor sports.  None of them care about it.

I'm thankful for it.

Curious what you would have in mind for something more "green" ?

Well....electric or hybrid I suppose. Lots of them around here anymore. You don't see them so much in the more rural areas but in cities they do make a certain amount of sense.

I had my own 70' Charger at 16 and have been driving it ever since still to this day. I actually gave my other 70' Charger to my Son we he turned 16 for his birthday present. Passed the torch on to the next generation. We are gathering parts and working on it together.
