Hello All, New to the Forum. I'm trying to get info on my fathers 1969 Dodge Charger 500. He bought it about 9 years ago from the guy who had owned it since 1979. The car came from Louisiana, Missouri. We bought it out of Elsberry, Missouri. It's pretty rough, unfortunately. No fender tag also. From what we can tell, it was a 440 auto, F8 Green with a F8 interior.. this car will be up at MCACN this year in the Barn Finds Section.

thanks for posting, always cool to see cars emerge like this  :2thumbs: have you posted up the VIN? Keen to see how close it is to my 500. F8 x2, 440 also.

The VIN is XX29L9B157506, we would like to get a fender tag made for it, by looking at the car we know what options it had on it, it's the build date and sequence number that are tricky.

A bit earlier than mine... Tags Back East are your guys to do the tag. Finding a couple cars with very close build dates should help you narrow it down for SPD etc

Thanks, we know that it was a very basic car, no light package, no A/C, 2 speed wipers. It did have a console. We looked for a build sheet, but no luck. We haven't looked on top of the glove box, I highly doubt it would be there.

Taped behind the glove box is a common place - I would check there. Also behind the bucket seat-backs, behind the rear seat, under the carpet in front foot wells....

Looked in the back seats and the backs of the front seats, no luck. The carpet was replaced with some yellow shag carpeting in the mid 70s. The car sat outside for 20 years so I don't have much hope.

Build date isn't an issue. Can't get a tag made though without the VON. Which at this point you would be wildly guessing at. It could be a slightly educated guess, but still would be a guess. Better to not have a tag made up without knowing the exact information to have put on it.

its not as much of an issue for now, but years down the road, once its changed hands a few times it is an issue because people start believing that the tag is factual.

Hola 69F8C500,                     19 April 2021

Viewing your photos kind of reminds us of what our garage looked like last year. Prior to selling one of our cars we didn't realize the magnitude of what it would take to get the remaining cars home to Phoenix, Arizona. So far we are at least 5 months behind our original estimated schedule.

Good luck in your endeavor and great success at the show. Not sure but you might share show barn space with the new parent of the car we sold last year; it's V2 Orange, Black Stripe and a Coyote.

I needs major work, the rear rails are completely shot, there are no floors, it needs that spare trunk lid. It will be restored eventually.

Keep your hope until the last. I just found two in my 500 yesterday under the carpet. It was glorious, until I read them and found that they were for a Charger SE and a Dart  :P

Someone replaced the original carpet with some hideous yellow shag carpeting in the mid 70s, so no possibility there.

Make sure you DONT DISTURB THE DUST...will make it look more authentic for barn find exhibit

I didn't think they'd take a car so rough as a barn find. Barn finds are nice if they are in pretty good shape but what good is a wasted rusted barn find that needs a total Restoration. :shruggy:

Barn find is just a general term. That's why it's called the barn finds and hidden jems section. There have been cars in that section that are way worse than this one, the savage GT cuda comes to mind.

aerolith

Barn finds aren't all they are cracked up to be?

Most Barns are soft earth floors, that create more rust issues than they prevent!
'Rising damp' comes to mind and probably a complete lack of 'air flow'...

Concrete floored garage with good ventilation would be FAR better methinks...

Or a nice plastic tent with a warm air blower... :2thumbs:

I wonder if they'd accept 72 Bengal Charger in Survivors Tent? Not a Barn find but a Back Yard Find? LEON.

They definitely would. Ours has only been inside for 10 years. It sat in a junkyard for 30 years before that. That why it's called barn finds and hidden gems. Not sure if Ryan Brutt has any spots left for the barn finds. You can always ask him.

Mines been in the garage for past 10+ Years. Maybe next Year? My 70 R/T would of been a better candidate. LEON.

Hi Folks,                09 July 2021

When we first posted pictures of our cars in our dilapidated garage, we were pretty embarrassed by the condition they were living in.

After seeing some of the photos others have posted we feel we have soul-mates here. We aren't the only ones with questionable digs for their cars.

Fortunately, they are now in a fine environment in Phoenix AZ where humidity is an endangered species, occasionally punctuated by a rare bit of dust.

Wishing all your cars happy days ahead.

Best Always

Without rust and bad drivers, there would be a LOT of cars still here...

Plenty still to go around, as some folks have garages/yards full of cars... :scratchchin:

My feeling is after the recent weather events in Canada (where my 71 GTX was built) they will use less salt in the future!
Salt corrosion on my car was pretty bad, the previous owner said ''six months of salt, six months of road repairs''! :slap:

My Charger 500 was luckier, sold in Florida and shipped to LA back in the early Nineties... :pity:
But as I live only 'one mile' from the salty sea, on 'an island' in the Thames Estuary, its a worry?

I drove to Phoenix from LA in 2005 to pick up Charger parts.
I thought Cali was 'hot and dry' 300 miles later, I now now better lol... :flame: :flame: :flame:
If you don't have aircon in 'Zona' you is TOAST!!! :angelwing:

The only salt they have there is on 'fish and chips'... :drool5: :drool5: :drool5:

Strangely this trunk area is much more painted than my F8 C500?

But the rust has been much more aggressive on this C500, than mine!
You always think 'yours is bad' then you see this...

Methinks the 'plug' will have to be removed to put this right???

Any progress on the resto? :2thumbs:

Not progress yet, just trying to collect parts for it. We have a new trunk lid for it, and other things like a center console. We have a date correct 440 for it as well. Yeah, unsure how that will be fixed, but we'll cross that bridge when we get there. It's sits just like the last pictures I posted, a couple more things to do before it's ready for MCACN.

aerolith

Many thanx for the reply.

Sorry to hear the original block has gone.
The plan 'was', for my C500 was a 69 hemi motor!

But the aficionado's in the UK frowned upon my idea?
I thought it was a cool plan for an even cooler car lol... :pity:

Four speed hemi, dana C500 in F8, does it get any better... :smilielol: :smilielol: :smilielol:

Looking at the pic's the rear quarters will need replacing.

Then the plug will literally 'fall out' lol...
Don't remove the section attached to the roof.
Just cut through somewhere easy on the upright sections.

Yeah the car needs everything, quarters, doors, fenders, hood, trunk, all floors, rear rails. It's a project but it's still here, at least. We're prepared for it, we know what we're getting into. I'm happy that the back glass and trim are still there.

aerolith

Hi again 69F8,

I read your last post and it didn't really sink in what you wrote!

Fenders and doors that's bolt on and line up.

Rear quarters and trunk floor getting a bit 'heavy duty now'..

Rear frame rails, full floorpans, now we are talking jig alignment work and specialist 'bodyshop'...
Carefully unpicking the rails from the rear floor and re-attachment is MEGA!

If you take out the rear floor with the rails we are talking 'Serious' metalwork here!!!

How do I know this 'cos I've been there and done that'!

Not on my car but on some 'friends' Daytona's and Superbirds...
