ON my 66, I have a play in the steering wheel with power assist and guess I could improve with adjusting the steering gear box. Where can I find the procedure?

John_Kunkel

The procedure is in the FSM.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Thank you. I had a look and this nut and screw are just below the exhaust manifold and barely accessible.
And I have the feeling that it is used to adjust play in the pitarm.
I have play in the steering colum where it enters in the steering gear box.
See pictures. I tried to show the play from one end to the other, it is about 1/16-1/8 of a turn.
Do I havbe to adjust with this nut and screw?

John_Kunkel

Red arrow shows the backlash adjuster screw and locknut.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Ok that's this nut. Just have to find a way to reach it. It's just under the exhaust manifold and  I can't slide in a flat wrench, will have to try with a socket...

EricS

I tried to adjust this screw after having un-locked the nut several turn. I can give it 1/2 turn and then it does absolutely nothing on the play in the steering shaft.
I fear I will have to remove the whole thing out of the car. Will do it next winter.
