Ace reporter, Sean Machado just sent me these pictures today from Bonneville.

The first one is Sean's Daytona next to the High Zoot #71 Tribute car. It's built on a complete NASCAR chassis, 9000+ rpm engine. Big $$$$$.
Picture #2  A full pit crew with gear changes, shock/ suspension tuning. They went 211 mph.

KurtfromLaQuinta

And here's the kicker...
First picture... Sean's friend Jerry with his '70 Charger Daytona clone with a 383 stroker to around 480 c.i., 4 barrel, stock 4 speed transmission and a 9" geared to the Moon. Pretty much a backyard build.
Second picture... look at their time...

Yes I agree. I've been fascinated with Bonneville since way back... '63- '64? Remember back to Craig Breedlove's Spirit of America? Art Arfons record holders?
I always wanted to go and participate. Soon, I hope, before I can't drive anymore.   :icon_smile_big:
Got to get my clone done!

I'm sure Sean has more info.
Sean did mention that Jerry was running a "2.45 ish?" gear in the 9". Also Jerry was taking it easy because "if he broke the record they wouldn't give it to him till he fixes a few more things".  ;)
They are very particular on the rules there. I have the SCTA rule book and am building my clone with the intentions of meeting the rules to 250+ mph.

I'm with you on the land speed / top end /  silver state /open road racing... appealing to me more than 1/4 mile. BUT... I'd like to see what my build would do at the strip just for the smiles of it. That's what's nice about a 9". A quick change of the drop out from going to the Moon to the stoplight to stoplight is an easy swap. And Dana 60's highest gear is 3.50. A no go at 5-6 miles of salt.

Congrats to the guys with the black clone car. That's movin pretty good.

Hey fellas, I've been a member here for quite a while. I just posted some info, but I have posted along the way with this project. 498" B block, 2.47 9" rear. Tires grew about 2 1/2" at speed, so this threw my final drive ratio off quite a bit. Due to this rpm peaked at 6400 on this run, and on the dyno that is 135hp less than max at 7400 which is what the gears should have done at 240mph or so.
Next year I should be able to break the current A/Classic Production record of 237.863mph. I am only 7mph off that with only a couple of changes.
You cats should plan to come out next year. Stop making excuses and get it done. This was an epic adventure and we're not getting any younger! If I can build my junk and tow the 5500 mile round trip, surely you can get their and join us! Sean Machado drove his Daytona down from CA to join us. Two friends drove from FL to support me. Trust me, you'll be glad you made the trip! It is one of the coolest events on the planet with the best people! I spent 30 minutes talking with Kenny Duttweiler about engines. Where does that happen? Aaron Brown from The Garage Shop gave me a piece of aluminum to extend my cowl scoop, which helped! Good stuff!

Jerry. So I didn't realize who you were. 2 and 2 together...    not the best with math.
Great story about your car. And I, like most of us here, are rooting you on!
I'm trying to be a participant at Bonneville with this project... https://www.ramchargercentral.com/threads/my-daytona-clone-project.326770/ And here... http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,139275.0.html
I'm not going after any records.... because, first off I want to drive my car there. Go as fast as I can. Then drive home. That's the plan anyways.
Sean asked me to go with him this year. I told him I'm a bad spectator.  :icon_smile_big: Maybe next year...
I want to get a hold of you. I have some questions to ask you soon. I'd like to talk to someone who's been there done it. Rather than fumble through issues.

70 sublime

In the videos how far apart are the markers you can see going past the car ?
next project 70 Charger FJ5 green

Lifsgrt

Black markers are 1/4 mile, orange ones are one mile.

Yep, bought the first car for this, a 1969 383 4-speed car, in 2007. Still have it waiting in the wings.  Then acquired the 1970 I ended up using, figured it was less of a loss if it got crunched. The 1970 car is solid now but I am surprised how much it cost to replace all the sheetmetal it needed, which was significant and time consuming!
