Car was R4, but I really like the orange. Does a color change really hut the value??

b5blue

Long ago I sold off my 65 rag top Mustang. I couldn't restore it to it's baby blue original color.   :o

You mentioned "Restoring".

You can uses a search engine for a definition of 'restore'.

If you change anything, it becomes a custom build, not a restoration.  :shruggy:

C500

"An aggressive exterior with power to match was enough to pull in the performance boys-especially when abetted by a pair of pipes blaring out the back, and brawny red-sidewall rubber hitting the pavement."

"........the four speed box changes cogs with the precision of a sharp axe striking soft pine."

Sgt Superbird

I know this isn't a poll, but keep it the original color. With so few 500s, I think you'd be doing a disservice to it if you changed it up. Also, if I was in the market (for any desirable Mopar), I'd want it the original color. :Twocents:

JB400

If it was green, I'd say paint it orange.  Being red, keep it red

70 sublime

Your car do what you want
If you are going to keep it for ever and want to paint it Panther Pink go for it
If it is just a car that you will have for a couple of years and get bored with it and sell it to get something else paint it the original colour will make it worth more
next project 70 Charger FJ5 green

RallyeMike

The amount of impact to value depends somewhat on other factors such as engine/trans, options, numbers-matching parts, etc. My input is.... the more original the car is, the more financial reason to keep it R4.

Also remember, you'll have some explaining to do to St. Peter if you paint it orange.

Yea looks like R4 will be the color. It's been off the road so long I think the factory color will be better. Never get rid of my cars. My shelby was color swapped before I got her. Love the white with the blue.

Shelby67air

C500 had black stripe and I was told recall wheels. I want to keep the black stripe but put on painted wheels with dog dish's.

hemi68charger

1. Will it hurt the value? Yes
2. Your car do as you wish.................. If you do Orange I would go with the Omaha Orange since you are deviating from original. The V2 is, as Pete eluded to, would make it look "Generalized"...

Even if your C500 was coded W23 (Kelsey-Hayes recalls), I doubt it left Creative on them let along got to Creative with them. I used to own the 614 car, Press Release car in the very first patch of 500s made. It was coded W23, but left with black steelies and full 15" wheels covers.......

Wow that's a serious hack job on the quarter and wheelhouse!

If it was my car I would go B5 blue...

R4 is just not me and never will be.

Mine is F8 and F8 is where she will be forever lol...

I also like Silver but the wife says ''NO'', so F8 it is, lol...

Would have to be a red stripe to match the tires...

What's the VIN sequence -164196?  That seems pretty late for W23 to still be on the Broadcast Sheet (which I'm figuring is not with the car).

Steelies, dog dish 'caps and red stripe tires would be a great combination. :Twocents:

Yes, that used to be my 500....

Car is a factory T5 car, but that is not the correct shade for a factory T5. It does look good though.

I have a (non original) orange Charger 500; everyone asks me it it's a real General Lee.  Go R4. I have to go back to F8, which is a harder bullet to swallow.

pretty sure someone cut the original quarter off of that car to use on another car way before quarters were available and the cars weren't worth much :coolgleamA:

Shelby67air

Anyone know more of the history of my car??  I bought it in rough shape. I was told it sat in a private junkyard since 1974.

the car will be ready for paint in a few weeks. Found a rear window in Canada. Going to need trunk hinges soon. where can i get the rear window gasket?? or the trim??

I thought that was you! Ha! You got the rear window from me a few years ago.
Charger 500's are bar none my favorite car, and R4 red is the bee's knees. If I ever find a Charger 500, and it becomes accessible to me, I can only hope that it is R4.

I inquired about this car back before you bought it.i recall the quarter missing and thr junkyard story. I was thinking that the tag and buildsheet were bith missing in action?

Why not paint it the color you want? What are the odds you are going to sell it to buy another That is the right color you wanted?

aerolith

Great work Shelby!

Looking at the R4 red car I noticed the 500 emblem was 'placed wrong' (possibly)?

I see your NEW rear panel is missing the holes so I will measure mine for you, don't want it miss placed lol...

How did Carrol get the 427 into this 'shoebox'???

What a clever guy!!!

My Mopar mate had a 1964 427 centre/top oiler and a toploader from the Shelby factory.
But life got in the way and he never built his dream car...

For me it would have to be B5 Blue methinks?

Hi Shelby67air,                 26 April 2022

If you are looking at it as an investment AND a car to enjoy, stick with original. If investment will never be an issue, have it painted any color you want.

We had 4 Mopar's at one time: PP1 Matador Red 68 Hemi Road Runner, R4 Bright Red 69 Six-Pack, V2 Hemi Orange 69 Hemi Daytona and a 70 Vit C Hemi Cuda.

The Cuda was sold long ago, 1975. The color and the paint didn't do a thing for us . . . . and neither did the car. The Daytona is and was our favorite; found her a new parent (Bob Jennings) and home in 2020. Still have the 68 RR and 69 SB. We like the R4 Bright Red on the SB and it will remain that color. Current thinking, the 68 RR will be repainted the same color as the SB, Bright Red, subject to change at the slightest whim.

Don't know if they produced 500's in Black, but do think it would look fantastic. That said, what would be the appropriate stripe color? White would be too garish, which only leaves Red and that would be just the right contrast.

Again, it's YOUR 500, so do what You want and tell the 426 Hemi Chicks to buzz off.

Last but not least: Looks like you are doing a fine restoration; Congratulations !!!

Hi Shelby67air,            28 April 2022

Recently noticed there's a Black 500 with a red stripe up for auction. It looks right nice. Still can't go wrong with R4 red, especially if that's the original color.

I had a buddy who picked up a #s 70 Hemi cuda.  Original f8 with black guts.
He wanted to go a different color but i think we talked him outta it, lol.  Green cars done right rock!

This was back around 2006.  Once it was done, he traded it off for 3 cars & $75k, iirc.
Larry Mathews sold it at BJ for $475k.  That was the year Hemi cuda prices exploded.

Imo, its already a anonymity rig.  Id restore it exactly the way it came.

Now some 383 Super Bee, 440-4 Charger RT...do whatever especially if theres no tag, verification.
But that rig is the top of the food chain for us.  If you change color, I guarantee the keyboard warriors will beat it up if its ever for sale for not being the original color, lol.
