Can 2 of us safely remove the wing in one piece?? or do I have to break it in 3??? I already hit all the nuts with rust blaster and they're free to turn without the studs coming out of the upright bases.

Thanks!

It's heavier and more awkward than you think.  Plus with one bolt on either side acting as a bending point I would strongly recommend taking it all apart  :Twocents:

Better safe.

I thought about just waiting to pick up a pair of broken uprights and a bent stabilizer real cheap, but trying to get them across the border and all...  :icon_smile_big: :nana:

LOL, off to see if I can get the cap screws out. This way I can possibly leave one upright on the car at least while the drivers side gets new paint. Thanks again..

about ten years ago at Carlisle someone removed their wing in one piece to haul up to the stage to have Petty sign it. The circus watching them attempt to remount it was worth the price of admission. There was a whole lot more than two people too.
wingless now, but still around.

First time in 45 years that I've ever been terrified removing a single bolt from a car! Steel out of aluminum rarely ends well. The rubber handles hole on a trolley jack handle makes a wonderful Allen key holder though. They were that tight!

If you can't laugh about it you'd fuckin cry !

When you took the upright off was there any flakes of junk that had fallen off the inside over the years from the aluminum ?

Hi Bees and Sublime,                   Election Day USA - 08 November 2022

Have a suggestion, while it's off, clean the inside and paint it, remove the studs if possible then clean the threaded areas of the wing and the studs then apply a liberal amount of Anti-Seize to the studs and the threaded holes. We're sure you-all are aware of anti-seize.

Best Always

You don't want the studs coming out... and they won't be. No reason to attempt to damage the threads in the aluminum or the studs themselves by needlessly removing them.

They fuse together aluminum and steel after long periods. The studs aren't coming out

Hahaha!!  :smilielol:

The Aquamax...yes, this bike spent 2 nights underwater one weekend. (Not my doing), but it gained the name, and has since become pseudo-famous. :)

The up right to wing foil attachment cap screws on each side. Were they painted to match body colour or bare steel when cars left Clairpoint?

If you paint all three pieces of the wing together I would think the bolts were painted

If you paint the three pieces apart then bolt them together I do not know how you would get the paint to stick to the bolt without chipping it when you tighten in up to hold the parts together

It has to be tight because that is one bolt you do not want to work loose and fall out

birdsandbees

We can paint that bolt head and put it together without damaging it, that isn't the question. ( put my entire Bee together with painted fender, door, etc bolts)

How did it come out of the factory?? Bare black phosphate or painted?

Original paint Superbird pic. Probably not painted too carefully when assembled.

I'm going to take a road trip to the Chicago MCACN this weekend to check out the wing cars and the judging process. Hope to get some pics for documentation for my disassembled Superbird. I'll look for some more of these wing bolt attaching areas too and let you know.
(BTW, that wing pic was my first attempt of resizing for this site... pretty easy peasy).  ;)

Hey Rob...did you happen to get a pic of the wing bolt on the 680 original mile 'Bird we saw on the judging lift? I didn't know Wayne was looking for this until I got home. Sorry Wayne!

BTW...it was nice for Wendy and I to meet you!

I've taken all kinds of pics of that car, and 14 minutes of video of it on the lift. And of all things, I didn't get any of that wing bolt! Total mind slip. Just so much to take in at that show. It was good to met both of you too.
