there is still quite a few laying around, but the really solid ones are getting very tough to find, or afford.

All the beaters are coming out of the bushes. Like the dented up, cut up, burned out Daytona on e-bay.

I think they fared better than many other cars of the era. But quite a few are gone. Whenever I see a set of decent doors or a nice grille, I figure its one car gone. Though many rotboxes are creeping out of the woodwork, pretty soon they are going to be the only way for many working guys to get one. With places like Auto Rust technicians making caps for all of the frame parts, I think many of these cars will be fixed up eventually.

Well.... That is kinda a catch 22 question, because there are many factors involved in the number left.....  The second gen Chargers were just used cars in the 70s, became collectors cars in the 80s (partially due to DOH), even more sought after in the 90s and since the price boom, are just getting harder and harder to find orginal, unrestored examples of.  Junk, rusty shells that I looked at in the mid 90s (and passed on at $500) are now showing up on ebay at multiples (4-8X) of that price  and people buy them because they can't find a better car to work with at their price range.  A lot of the Chargers that went into the junkyards in the early years just did not make it, but if they went into the right junkyards (R&R for example), they were saved at least for a while.  The main problem is that alot of the saved ones were "rode hard and put away wet", leading to later damage that needs to be fixed.  So, while they exist, they might only be a shell with a few parts attached.....  The rare ones at least had a chance of being kept in a garage, as most of the shells that I find are 318 auto cars.  The DOH effect both helps them and hurts them at the same time as people began restoring them to make GLs, but I know of at least two factory orginal RTs (one a 68) that were converted into GLs that did not need to be.  As more movies are made that feature Chargers, they become even more sought after, even to the point that bad parts cars become restoration projects.  Long gone are the days of finding a row of them (unless they are your own) in a field.  I grew up in Kansas where I saw a row of 20 second gens at one time out in a farmers field (used as a wind break nonetheless), but by the time I was able to earn the $ needed to buy one, they were long gone (crusher took them in the late 80s)....  (I know of a particular second gen Charger RT/SE Hemi car that was destroyed back in the 80s by a drunk teen playing DOH out in his father's field).  The car was cut up and sold in pieces later (Wish I had the # info off of that one....)  So, while some kept their Chargers pristine, others trashed theirs until they were gone.  As time ticks on, attrition plays its part and less and less good ones are left, but more and more projects can fall out of the workwork (but that only goes until that dries up too).........

Does anyone have the production numbers for each Gen?  It would be interesting to find out how many are left.........even if its just a ballpark figure!  :icon_smile_big:

when racing deals fall apart.....you go home, like me.

Rack

I got mine (and an R/T  :o ).

It's not gonna be restored to the way it was when it left the factory, but it's still gonna be a '68 charger, it's gonna be better then new, and it's gonna be a kick ass muscle car.

The purists may not approve but a modified '68 charger is better then a dead '68 charger.

Ghoste

Good for you Rack.  It's your car so do what you want, just don't kill it. :icon_smile_big:

Or try and E-Raffle. Sell a few tickets here via paypal or something. Maybe $100 a ticket. You sell $200 tickets you've got 20K. And I'm sure some of the guys here would buy multiple tickets.

I'm raffling my Sig P220. I haven't sold as many tickets as I expected (still have a few people to talk to though), but I've already made more money then if I were to sell the gun instead of raffling.

i bet my wife bought a ticket

(I know of a particular second gen Charger RT/SE Hemi car that was destroyed back in the 80s by a drunk teen playing DOH out in his father's field).  The car was cut up and sold in pieces later (Wish I had the # info off of that one....)

an R/T S.E. Hemi?..  :P

IIRC they did make such in 1970

I think the definition of how many cars are "remaining" has changed.  Ten years ago, a rusted pile of parts would not have been counted as a "remaining" car, but we just saw a burned-out AND rusted-out Daytona sell on eBay for $40,600...   :o

By extension then, I guess there are now more cars "remaining" than there were ten years ago?

:shruggy: :scratchchin:

Gene,

Not to disagree with the master here.  But IIRC a certain very good friend of mine actually owns a 1970 Charger R/T SE with a Hemi and 4spd.  I actually asked and IIRC what he told me 4 were built.  I had the same quiry about there only being R/T cars.  This one is almost done being restored.

This a person will a large knowledge base.

I will ask to be sure again, but I know I have not lost that much info in my brain (YET)

In 1970 they did make a Hemi RT/SE, but I don't believe it was available in '69.  I thought that's what I was saying, but it may have come out wrong.

Sorry if I was too confusing - it's been a long day...

Hows that old saying go?  We kill/destroy every one we see, and then build a monument to the last remaining one. :rotz:

I found mine a few months ago.  No motor, tranny, or hood; but with new quarters and trunk pan installed (badly).  Over the last few years I passed over way too many nice cars (in today's standards) that I thought were too pricey for their condition (in yesterday's prices).  Oh well.  Just keep your eyes peeled, they are out there.

You need to find yourself a donor car, some four door B-body with good rear frame rails, etc..... Scavenge all the parts you need, junk the rest, and put your Charger back together.

Yeah I do need a donor car but I need a Charger donor car since I need pretty much the whole rear lower half of the car replaced...

I might be wrong, but I think other than the sheetmetal, the underside if the B-Bodies are all the same.

I might be wrong too but I do think you are right.  I would still need the rear quarters and some patch peices for around the rear window (that them butt wipes at HLPAG said was in great shape and not in need of fixing).  I also need the floor pans too but they could be the same on all B bodies, I really don't know...
