Quite often I see it mentioned to use a self etching primer. Such as a post I read about grill restoration. WHat is the advanages of this over a regular primer?

Drop Top

It allows the surface to be primed without having to etch the area. Its designed to be used on areas that have no paint or primer on it already and is clean. Its actually intended for bare metal that is free of contaminants.

I don't like to use it. Or do I recommend using it. I much prefer to etch the metal first and then use a good primer surfacer that is intended for bare metal.

In the case you are repainting a plastic grill. I wouldn't use this type of primer. Because it will have paint on it already, and its not intended to be used on plastic anyway.
