1968 upper door pad emblem oddity

I remember once a while back someone was asking about their 1968 charger upper door pad emblems as they were slightly different. The difference was that rather than have a red segmented ring around the Charger script, each of the 3 segments was a different color. Red, white, and blue. A couple other examples were posted and it was chaulked up to being likely something done by previous owners. Has anyone figured this out? I ask because I just spotted another 68 that appears to be totally unmolested, being prepped for restoration that has these. The paint looks factory (no brush strokes, same style paint as the usual all red units). It would be cool to know exactly what is going on.

8WHEELER

The segmented ring around the Charger script is allways red, most of the original Charger round
inserts I have, have the actual Charger name in black paint on them, the repop's have no color.

This is my beat to hell original that I have worn the black paint off of on the script.

the red white and blue emblem is a factory deal ....my original 68 had this also i talked with wayne wooten about this along time ago and it was decided it may be an early production deal my first one was built in oct of 67

That makes sense. It is obvious they are legit. It would be cool to figure out when they were used. I will have to get that cars VIN.

Me to, I have had many many 68 Chargers in the last 28yrs, I have September and October 67 built
68 Chargers now and one May 68, and I have never seen anything other than the red one I posted
over all the 68's I have had or seen.

I would like to see the other version   :shruggy:

I believe there were some pics posted in the first thread about this Tan Top but I can't for the life of me remember the title of the thread or for that matter if it was something from the old forum.

Charger-Bodie

i will give the guy that bought my gold charger a call and ask him to email me a pic of the emblems but i can tell you this i am positive it was factory i boght that car in 1985 and it sat in a grove of trees for almost ten years at that time and it was nise even paint not thick like something a custom job would have most likely been

So the charger script would have been black and not a chrome like color for 1969 also?

When I get down to the body shop and see this '68 again, I will take a pic of the emblem. The whole thing is exactly like the usual '68 and '69 style, but the painted outer ring is red white and blue rather than all red.

smasherofall

my 68's production date is 09/12/67. mine are all red

Charger-Bodie

the ones that were on my charger were red white and blue ...so maybe its not a early build thing but what? the charger i had was a special order car that was sold when new at a dodge dealer called hollywood dodge in obviously hollywood ca i dont know the reason but it was that way and i talked to the guy i sold it to and he is going to send pics soon

My understanding is that the Charger script was black from the factory, but is just usually all worn off.

I've had two cars with the red white and blue.  All early 68.  These two cars also had the extra brace for the tail panel.  An early style trunk torsion bar set up and most noticable the trunk deck lid has a underside frame similar to a hood instead of the one formed piece of later chargers.
smasherofall,  Does your charger have all those early style idiosyncracies?

My '68 has the red, blue and white emblems.  It has a SPD of 9/18/67.

My interior is all original and mostly unmolested and it doesn't LOOK like the script was ever black.  Looks like it was always silver to me...?  But I suppose with wear and age it could have rubbed off. ???

Just thought I'd add my two cents...  :icon_smile_cool:

Yeah, that's how mine looked too. I've seen some on Ebay that still had a bit of black on them. I think the fact that the black wears off so much easier, and more completely than the red (or red, white, and blue) is what brings people to believe that it was never there. Hell, I don't know for sure, but I'm still pretty certain the script was black from the factory, and I went ahead and re-painted mine black when I cleaned up my pads.

TylerCharger69

I've seen one...maybe two '68's with the red, white, and blue....but that's about it.   Never seen it on a 69 or 70 though.  I never really thought of it being a major thing until now....Another mystery of Charger history I suppose..Just like the mystery holes in the firewalls.

Doc74

Wait a minute wait a minute...the whole silvery thingy should be black ?? Terrible one can you post a pic or two of your scripts ? I've never seen a black one before, not that I've looked for it since the sliver looked original to me and most others probably.

You guy's made me go look at my car and I have the same red, white and blue emblems. :scratchchin: My trunk lid also has the inner frame. My build date was Sep. 21, 1967.  I thought they were all like this.  :scratchchin:  I wonder if there is something else different as well ?

Were there seperate interior packages for the '68?  I didn't think so, but....?

Also, this might be a stupid question, but does the interior color make a difference?  It doesn't appear that way.  My interior is red, and the other image posted appears to be black.  Just throwing out a few (uneducated) guesses. ???

bull

Mine had a red one on the driver side and a red, white and blue one on the pass side when I bought it, but the pass side pad was shot so I bought another pad off Ebay with a red one. I figured someone was just screwing around and painted the white and blue but I guess it's probably original since mine is an early '68. I don't think I have the time or energy to worry about making it correct though.

charger_mike75

Could this oddity have something to do with where the cars were built?

JimShine

Okay, here is an update. I just received much of the unused portions of the interior from this car. The interior was gold. Lower door panels are all dated August 11, 1967. So this is obviously something that happened very early on and not for long.

I called it an oddity because when it was brought up in the past, it was dismissed as being non-factory. When you start seeing the exact same stuff on many cars done the exact same way, you start questioning. Now we have a thread that answers this question should anyone ask about it in the future.

Charger-Bodie

to add to that i witnessed a very original 68 charger at the all mopar show in west salem wis. last weekend with a build date of 8 28 of 67 and it had all the early prod stuff too !! i m pretty sure weve nailed this deal down.
