There is something real familiar about that picture.  I can't place it but the house in the background looks familiar for some resaon.  It's probably just my imagination though.
Does the car belong to anyone here?

69_500

I don't think it belongs to anyone on here. I don't recall anyone having any SE Daytona's on this board. I've only seen a few SE Daytona's over the years period.

Ghoste

Does the photo look familiar to you in any other way Danny?

69_500

Now that I look at the add on ebay, it looks familiar because I recognize the sellers name as someone I've talked to. The only thing I saw though, and maybe you guys noticed it too. A typo in the broadcast sheet. its pretty easy to spot.

THE VIN>

69_500

In the VIN on the broadcast sheet, it has XXX three X's. Not 2.

69_500

I know he mentions in the add how he added a few options to the car, like electric motors to help the headlights, and a new AM/FM radio, but he forgot to mention that someone has added the TACH. I see no N85 on the broadcast sheet or fendertag.

Is a very good looking car though. Not perfect, but its definately a RARE car.

Nice looking car, but they probably described it appropriately as a #2 car.  There are a ton of little details that would need to be addressed if someone was trying to make it 100% correct, but there's no reason to worry about such - unless the goal was to end up with a 100 point restored car.  I will be interested to see where the auction ends up.  With the lackluster results at B-J, I've been wondering if the waning enthusiasm would carry over into the eBay circus arena as well.

If you notice, all the numbers starting with the sequence number at the left are over one place to the right.  I think what you're seeing is a combination of the last number of the VON and a tear in the sheet making it appear to be another letter.

Quotei wonder what the the deal is with the numbers on the core support

The stamping on the radiator support matches the tag and BS. The plant letter and number switch positions on the stamping. If you're referring to the '4', I don't see that as a big deal.

Cool car and pretty rare....

I saw the same thing you did, Doug - I just couldn't tell if the "first" X was really there or not.  Everything is definitely shifted over.

I thought the radiator yoke stamping was a little odd myself.  Not because of the 4 or the B9, but because the font seems different than my car's (which was made at the same plant just a scant 3 weeks later).  Just an observation though, nothing to be terribly concerned about.

It is still a gorgeous car. One I wouldn't want though, as I don't care for the Y2 yellow. I'd take a daytona in any color though, just would prefer one in another shade than that.

That one appears to have the typo corrected. :)

Aero426

I fell for it hook line and sinker when I just glanced at it yesterday, but that rad support stamping does not look right at all.

In particular the  B and 9 are not the correct font, and the 4 looks stamped over something.

This car was registered with DSAC a couple of different times, in 1981 and 1988 by two different owners - so it's been around.  The mileage reported as 23k original would have to be 123k.  It was registered back then with 109k on the clock.    I will pull the paperwork tonight and see what's there.

That is certainly possible.  There's no telling when it was done.    Could still be a legit car, but It certainly raises questions being that it looks so obvious.

Are the trunk lip numbers going to be there, or does the rear window plug cover them?

tan top

still be there  :yesnod:  the work never went down that far .  all that area would of got was may be a extra coat of primer as well as the top coat (color)

The trunk lip numbers should still be visible.  I know they are on my car, but stranger things have happened.  If they stamped the trunk lip WAY up near the corner, it's possible it got covered up.  They left the majority of that lip in place, so they'd have had to hit just the right/wrong spot to lose that info.  I'd be REAL skeptical of the car if it was missing that number.

Like you said, I think the car is probably legit, but that yoke stamping just flat doesn't look right.  The Moparts guys seem to think that the font matches up perfectly to what they have seen in/on 1970-71 cars - but that doesn't jive with what I've seen for 1969 anyway.  I'm certainly no expert though.

Here's a wild-guess idea...

The car is in a wreck, and the yoke needs to be replaced.  The owner JUST HAPPENS to find a '70 B-body made at the Hamtramck facility sitting in a junkyard , that has his exact VIN sequence, all except for the second-to-last digit.  He buys the yoke, and changes the "0" denoting 1970 to a "9", and modifies whatever the second-to-last digit of the VIN to now read a "4".  Voila, a numbers-matching yoke.

Yeah, yeah... I know, that's far-fetched, but it would explain why the font difference and why those two numbers look like they were altered.  In all honesty, those pictures are about the only thing on the car that really looks/smells really fishy to me - although the point that Doug makes about the mileage does raise some issues with the seller's credibility.  He'd have been better off leaving that yoke picture out.

:Twocents:

69_500

It is also possible that the current owner puchased the car a few years ago, under the impression that it was a 20K mile car. And he has put a few miles on it, now thinking its 23K. I remember back in the early 80's almost every Daytona my dad looked at was 80K+ if not already over 100K miles. Not sure how so many of the Daytona's for sale now are supposedly all 30K or less. Another thing that I remember as a little one, is how many of the wing cars were not #'s matching in the early 80's. But I don't recall the last Daytona I've seen for sale, or at a show that isn't being touted as #'s matching.

Aero426

I tend to think the car is legit with a replaced rad support.   I'd still want to take a close look at that car, especially the trunk numbers.

Paperwork in the file takes it back to June 1987 in the Sacramento Area.   Owner states the car was originally delivered in Vegas and has been out west the whole time.   Geno, does that dealer in Vegas story make sense?

In '87 the car was R4 with a white interior, but at that time came with a Govier decode showing the Y2 and CRX interior.  Mileage was reported at 109,000 at that time.    The car was advertised for sale shortly thereafter at $15,000.

hemigeno

Doug, the 'Vegas dealer is at least possible, but that's not what the records show.  The Shipping List shows Stanley Dodge in National City CA as the dealer who originally received the car.  That does not mean it wasn't swapped between dealerships and ended up selling from somewhere else.  National City is in the San Diego area, which isn't exactly close to Vegas.

I think the car was originally intended for shipment to CA, since it has N97 on the B-cast sheet.  Hard to say if it did sell (new) in Vegas or not, but my guess is probably not.

Based on what you're saying, the guy is definitely mistaken about the mileage, although those seat covers don't look to me like they have 123k miles of wear on them.   :o  'Course he never said that it was the original interior though.  I just ove the look of those leather seats.

They are probably not the original seat covers.  In '87, the owner stated it had white buckets installed, but was an original CRX leather car.   He also mentioned that the car had been owned in the San Diego area at one time.

Is the N97 why it has the dual snokel air cleaner?

tan top

yes N97 package = noise reduction package .   twin snorkel silenced air cleaner /  exhausts with turn downs , instead of tips .

i seem to remember it might have included , exhaust resonators ,  &  leaner carburettor settings  plus  distributor modifications ( mechanical / vacuum - spark timing  )  i think  form memory .... for California cars only . might be thinking of something else though  :-\
