I got a line on a 440.     Not that I see this stuff in my neck of the woods all the time so I'm thinking pick this up for a spare/ 493 stroker project.   How much should I offer.

QuoteYes, it's a 70 Hp2 440 block. It's stamped E440 7 31 HP2. Here is what it includes: Block with smooth cylinder walls. I think that it's the stock bore, but not 100% sure. Balancer, crank and timing set, timing cover. No pistons and or rods. Has a chrome aftermarket deep pan. Also has heads, I think they are the good ones, they seem to have new springs on them, but I don't know what else was done.

Yeah,  the 440source dot com kit might go nicely...  I already got E-heads.

Hey Brian, for a stroker build all you really need is a good block and main caps....everything else will be replaced anyway. You could pick it up if it's cheap enough, then flip it to some guy looking for a 70hp date coded block/heads etc...

Fwiw, i've got a 74 c-body 440 that i'll be using for my 493 project. The year of the block casting doesn't mean a whole lot as long as the block checks out good. If you're buying this hp motor solely for a stroker project...my advice would be to have the block Sonic checked at least....then decide on a course of action.

$500 and maybe flip some heads & forged crank?  Or less?

I bought a complete '70 440 HP2 shortblock for $300.  The one you're looking at seems to be in that price range, maybe even a bit cheaper because most of the rotating assembly is missing.

:iagree: $300.00 should be in the ballpark. The fact that the rods and pistons are MIA hurts the value. This could be a 6-pack block....the balancer will tell the story. Rods and pistons are easy enough to find....even 6-pack rods are cheap to buy reconditioned these days. I'd be thinking that it might be worth getting just to flip to a "resto" type guy with a 70 body looking for a date coded motor.

I said $300... he said $400.   I think we're close.   I'll probably do it.

I'll go pick it up Monday... Either stroker kit...

OR just a set of H beams,  some 10.5 Diamonds,  decking/bore/hone/balance job = spare bullet.

That's OK.  If it's not a sixpack rod / crank/ balancer etc that makes my life easier  :yesnod:
I don't get offered many 440's up here for decent $.   Mostly I get offered steaming piles for too much $.
I'll go pick it up later 2nite if it's not monsooning out.

XS29L9GI12884 is the winner.

Heads are 906's,   got 2.14 valves as best I can tell and are shaved a bit.

If that is your VIN and you want your block... well... $ talks.

Excellent !   :2thumbs: Now e-bay those big valve 906's and recoup some of your investment $ Those will be worth something to the guy looking for better heads but can't afford aluminum castings.   ;)
