First... the first doubts came out on board long time ago:
http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,12068.0.html
http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,12740.0.html

then I analize my assembly and learnt how the 2 speeds system is assemblied and works:
http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,15057.0.html

after all, started to grow up all the doubts about the V/3 speeds and 2 speeds difference inside me, specially because I wanted the upgrade:
http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,23779.0.html
http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,29706.0.html

then the hunt started:
http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,31527.0.html

Searching about doubts, PN etc, got to ask to a remanufacturer about the parking stuff between both systems. AND GOT THE ANSWER

Hi Nacho, the 3 speed motor for your car does not use an external parking cam assembly. The 2 speed motors require this feature, 3 speed motors have this built into the motor itself. The motor 3431624 will work, I believe that you will require the crank arm w/pin part number 3431635 to connect to the drivers side linkage. Speaking of the drivers side linkage, this may have to be replaced as well.
Your 2 speed will use linkage arm part number 3431646 and the 3 speed requires linkage arm 3431647. These part numbers are from my 1973 parts manual, hopefully it is the same for 1974. You will also have to locate a switch as you cannot use a 2 speed switch with a 3 speed motor.

When you see the three speed motor, look closely at the out put shaft. You will notice that the shaft is not directly in the center of the motor. When the motor is turned on, the shaft changes position to allow or cleaning of the glass. When turned off, the shaft rotates backwards for 1/2 a revolution and then it goes back to its offset position and pulls the blades under the hood opening. The 2 speed motor has a single straight out put shaft and when it is reversed nothing happens except it just goes in reverse. To complete the pulling of the blades under the hood opening, it requires the external parking cam assembly to accomplish this feature.
This sounds confusing and it is. But some genius at Chrysler came up with this idea 30+ years ago and it does work.

Hopefully this helps.
Take care,
Rick.

also got a pic show diff from on line service manuals

Found the assembly from a 74SE donor but PN didn't match with he stated and what 400/6/PACK showed on pics, that was my last doubts about AND GOT WHY IS THAT!!!

there was two kind of assemblies... all with plastic bushings but some just with bushing to sanp on and some others with bushings where shafts need retainers. probably bushings are the same just shafts are longers, trought bushing ( without top, just a hole to pass throught ) and use retainers. all interchangeable as full assembly. Probably parts too with some small mods

Pic of retainers assembly below. Crank shaft retainer is not visible, but mostly sure is the same because the catalog pics and service manual pic.

And below it, the assembly with SNAP kind bushing

My 74 SE currently has a 3-speed on it, would I need anything to swap it into my 73 SE that has a 2-speed?

wiring and plugs inside the cab are the same.

motor of course is diff, same as switch

motor harness is already attached on to V/3 speeds so is not a problem.

linkage:
I still have to get it to know it better but as far pics tell me, IF DONOR PARTS share the same shaft attaching that the one you want to change, then would need just the motor crank and main linkage up to drivers pivot

Now, if your car does have the plastic pivot snap on bushings and donor uses the bushing and link shaft needs the retainer ( or everything backward) PROBABLY is better change the complete assembly including pivots.

I will know for sure when I get the pictured assembly.

The pictured linkage assembly does look more straight that the clip on bushing kind thought.

I also wish we had a tech archive.   I realize that the reason we probably don't have one is that it would have to be moderated and that takes a lot of time that most of us don't have.

Nacho
Good job.
That's  where we were getting confused.
There are two different assembly's for the same year model.
Your research will help a lot of people.

Yeah that's why I was searching a further info, specially with your pics... I know there was something weird and I had to know to search for the right parts. How finally did you assembly your one ?

you mean two diff assemblies for 3 speeds or two diff assemblies, one for 2 and other for 3 speeds ?

Good work Nacho! My wipers work but still stick out about 3 inches...have to find one of the lil' doofers that make the wipers retract below the hood

just a note aside... there is another kind of assembly available... this is with same snap on bushing linkage shape but metallic retainers instead. Notice the diff shape from the first one, the similarity between second one but using earliers attaching kind:

and this one what does look the intermediate one:

NOTICED ANOTHER DIFFERENCE...

Pivots are slightly diff between plasting bushing kind and metalic retainers kind... shafts where hooks the linkage are shorter on plastic bushing kind to make the snap on... metalick reatinres are longer to get through the bushing and clip the retainer

another diff and I don't know if is because BODY or YEAR... got a linkage what I think came from an earlier E body ( not sure about thought ) and mouning baseplate are diff. I mean the triangular shape is BIGGER on some models and then won't meet with firewall holes

casuality or not, this pivot ( driver side ) with longer linkage shafts and bigger baseplate is the same unit. I mean both differences are on same pivot.

Another diff but is not something to worry. Some pivots models have a hole at a side of pivot shaft to oil the shaft

THEN take care about that stuff when changing parts from one car to another

I have a question about the linkage arm between the pivots.

It looks like in one style the flat part faces back, and in the other it faces forward.

Is there anychance plastic cap linkage arm between the pivots should be facing the same way as the other type.

Thank you for any info.

bajaherbie

thanks to this thread i got my wipers working... was worried that the gears were also bad but it was all in the wiper motor wiring. some of the insulation had fallen off and the motor would run sporadically.

nge

Since youve solved all my othere wipper problems with this tread , can anyone tell me a good source on replacement 3rd geneation wipeb blades and/or bade refills

thanks
Vic

Nacho-RT74

Being outside USA I have found them on ebay... just write "mopar wiper" and they will float on... allong with several more stuff LOL.

I think Rockauto also gets the refills, however mostly of the wiper parts there are generic aftermarket FULL BLADE replacements, which hits the hood when parking

I remember the Anco refills should be still available on parts stores. On my 2008 USA trip, I saw some.

Just needed to trim a little bit the "clipping" area

Hi Nacho,

I have a wiper problem.
I bought 1973 Charger 3 months ago and the wipers never worked, becouse the drive linkage was in the trunk
I have followed this thread very closely and re-assembled everything according to your pictures.
All retainer clips are plastic.
I finally got it running today and it seems that some thing is binding, once per revolution....the motor fights against resistance and then it pops and jumps past the resistance.
I'm not sure...but is seems that I either missabled it or one of thi linkages is incorrect.  Everying looks like your pictures and went together with out a problem....
I need your help on this one please!
Thanks

nge

I figured it out. Wipers on the wood table were assembled wrong.
I re-assembled them like the picture on the ground/blacktop and thay work fine!!
there is a difference!

I looked at the first picture to assemble everything and it bound up....
then I looked at the second picture.
Look closely at the pic on the table you see that the drive link is on the " outward facing " pin. On the outdoor picture the on reward facing pin.  the set up that finally worked for me was based on the outdoor picture....in hindsight it matches the parts catalog diagram

Interesting thread, I need to get into mine one day and fix the park mechanism. Sometimes it will almost bring the wiper blades back down to where they need to be, and sometimes they will back up about 4 inches back up on the windshield. Probably just needs a little oil here and there.

I'm not even sure what this part looks like. From memory I do have some sort of nylon cam on the pivot shaft but a section is missing. Is this the offending part?

Nacho-RT74

yes... is a two pieces nylon assembly ( along with spring, retainers, washers )
