It's hard to belive that historically significant muscle still comes out of barns. You'd die just to find a real Six-Barrel Superbird, much less a car that Chrysler gave away to Richard Petty. All the paint and panels are original. Before the car was stripped, the quarter -panels were sketched on CAD to ensure that the lettering can be redone exactly as it was.>

When Steve got the call that there was a 'Bird up in Lansing, Michigan, that had been in a garage since 1976, he thought he probably needed it-but knew for sure when he found out it was a 440+6 car with a Pistol Grip four-speed and the Super Track Pak option. The owner had picked it up for $2,500, driven it for a while, then parked it.

Steve bought the thing after seeing it stuffed in the garage, but when it got home, he wondered why "Daytona Winner" was hand-lettered on both quarters. It clearly wasn't a NASCAR race car. The answer came when Mopar Performance's Dave Hakim recognized it. There was also photographic confirmation from Larry Rathgeb, the lead engineer on the Chrysler winged-car program. This was the Superbird that Chrysler awarded to team owner Richard Petty after Pete Hamilton won the '70 Daytona 500 in the No. 40 Superbird. All signs point to the conclusion that Petty wrapped up the publicity photos with the car, then asked Chrysler to sell the car and hand over the cash. Steve has already stripped it for a full restoration.

Makes for some interesting history even if Richard Petty only owned the car for what, 15 minutes?  Long enough I suppose that you would want to restore the car with the lettering restored as well.

you'd be making MCG happy!

But would they want the "as painted Day One" lettering or the "slightly faded as found" lettering?  What if I call their office and they're out inspecting other restorations and stuff and they aren't available to make the call for me?  How do the big time collectors make decisions like this?

1RareBird

I was the one who made the deal with Steve for the car.  It will be restored as it was given to Petty.  I need to get off my butt though and do some more research on the car.  I would like to find out if it was ever even sold through a dealer and if so which one?  I would like to talk to Petty too if possible and try to get more details.  I don't have much time right now to get into any details but if you have questions feel free to ask.

the best thing to do would be to place a warm towel over your head, find a clean corner of the room, lie down in the fetal position and suck your thumb until someone more worthy of the car comes along.

Was this car really found in Lansing Michigan? Holy Cow that is right in my back yard. Would like to hear more details of the find and the history.

Redbird

I have a picture of Richard Petty accepting keys to a white Superbird at a race track in 1970 where it is custom lettered differently than the car recently shown in Hot Rod. I wonder if they re-lettered the car and passed the keys back and forth a couple of times.

Or was he awarded more than one Superbird?

I found this and sent it for rarebird to check it out.I also found the blog where I seen the picture and sent that for him to try to get direct contact from orig source. The blog I seen it on mentioned nothing about car being Pete Hamiltons though hes pictured in it .Blog just said heres a superbird blah blah

Another site I found had this mention of a MI prior car dealer employee

He and Carol married in 1970, and he joined the [[[[Summit Township Fire Department]]]], sold cars at Jackson Chrysler Plymouth and worked at some local factories, ...

Nascarxx29 thanks again for all your help.  I didn't even think to compare the person in my car with anyone else.  Uncanny resemblance.  If ANYONE has contact information on Pete (full name Peter Goodwill Hamilton) it would be greatly appreciated!  As for my car, it's funny that if you look in the picture the rear wing horizontal bar is pointing down.  It's still that way today.

I was looking at some old pictures of Pete and comparing them to the guy in the drivers seat of the superbird.  A lot of facial features look the same including hairstyle, facial structure, nose, chin etc and they sure seem to match. It's either Pete or a guy that looks like him.  Won't really know until I get a hold of him to find out.

I recognized the picture that matched the former Atwell car thats now Rarebirds .I found on this blog with that picture and description below

Plymouth Super Bird

Rare car but not a rare sight.  A lot of these cars sat on the dealer lot for a long time.  Big wing, nose cone, and a hot running big block were not exactly what everyone was looking for.  Now they command big money, but like a lot of low production muscle cars, they were not loved much when new.

Also I went through all blog postings old a new didnt see anything else wingcar related but found these and more FM3 70 RR on the showroom floor etc. Superbird on page  2
