A VERY UNIQUE Superbird

Does anyone know of this UNIQUE Superbird? #1176 in the Nascar list of vins and is in the Chrysler Registry.
Here are the oddities, originally a 440 car now a HEMI, (vintage engine), factory electronic ignition, (old blue and silver box), a REAL ONE PEICE R/T hood, FRONT and rear wheel well molding, tail light molding. The front wheel well molding was never a factory option and as far as I know was never produced, but it is on this car, yep, it's 1 piece, not a mock up.
I have checked back 2 owners and these mods were on the car when they got it.
Suggetions have been made that possibly a Chr. Engineer had the car and had Lynch Road do some tricks. I have the build sheet and fender tags.
see the attached picture.

jga262

It is definitely that, it was a chore to build one to house 5 cars in my back yard. I will get a pic for you.

Wow, i've never thought of that idea.  You must have a pie shapped lot.  :scratchchin:

Since all the birds were built Nov 69,I would really question the electronic ignition.

Ghoste

I question a lot of it without a little more evidence but I'm a skeptic.  After that, I will add that it's a great looking car and I'm really digging the hood.  :drool5:

Is the car original paint?
I've seen the Super Bee hood conversion on a few Superbird over the years. I never heard of one being factory. Or seen a factory photo/advertisement etc...
Front wheel lip moulding could be from a 1970 Coronet - rear from a 1970 GTX.
Electronic Ignition wasn't an option - another over the counter piece.
Tail light moulding would be another GTX piece.
Also that vinyl roof isn't anything Chrysler would have put on a car during that era...more like a local trim shop.

I agree... but would require a lot more evidence... or maybe just clarification of how "original" you believe the car to be.

Great looking car though, and the garage too!  Welcome to the forum!

As said we would need more info .Dont recall of hearing of this original 6 pack car car off hand.Though the tail end treatment is changed like the Blue Bird show car which is better described on page 2 .It also says its one of [Three] show cars retained by Chrysler. The 70 coronet power bulge hood thing has been done ..But far as I know not by the factory.I have some of those hoods but never sacrificed one for a wingcar .But I do have a 70 coronet to hang it on.But have seen some other mods done to real superbird hoods  :o :o

I saved a 70 R/T hood for my wife's bird clone.
At one point I had decided that I just couldn't cut up such a rare hood, but the wife says cut it.  :hack:

To all who have replied, thanks.
Here is what I know to be true.
1-The top is original, and I have a NOS Mopar one to match.
2-The front wheel molding from a coronet won't be the same, the lower fender extensions are different.
3- I know electronic wasn't offered until 71, does not mean it did not exist. So far all who have examined the wiring say it appears to be completely factory, so only the original owner will know.
4- I do realize that the rear wheel and tail molding are from a GTX.
5- I do have the build sheet and the fender tag is intact and both have been decoded by Galen G.
6- Original color was Vitamin C Orange and it still appears in the trunk.
7- Other than the hood, engine, wheels, steering wheel and paint the car is 100% original. I have the origainal wheels and steering wheel.
Sooner or later some one will recognize this car and then I will know more.
The last title I have is from Alexander Virginia.

Milt Wood rides around with wheel lip moldings, too.

nascarxx29

Milts car was Gary Rollins of Detroit. And customized it has a 70 RR airgrabber hood on it.Milt works at Chrysler maybe he heard of this car
