The Superbird wing is now on my 69 Roadrunner (with pics)

My wife has been after me to put our extra Superbird wing on our 69 roadrunner for quite a while. I've resisted, but finally decided that since I won't have the time to build her new Superbird clone for a while, I might as well and go ahead and do it. She has really become a wingcar nut the last few years. Even her truck has a wing.
This wing is one that Don Currie built for me a couple of years ago. It's a steel skin over a tubular frame. He did a great job in my opinion. I just don't have that type of ability. It was damaged in shipping a little so it required some body work. I hadn't noticed the damage until I decided to paint it.
I used a set of the Daytona wing braces that I've been building and selling on this forum for the last couple of years. With just some minor alterations, they worked out pretty good. I made a set of wing washers out of .090 aluminum. Should work just fine. We took the car out this afternoon and it doesn't shake or anything which was a relief. I'll check it for high speed vibrations later on. Since seeing the pics of the 69 Runner being used to mock up the Superbird, the wing doesn't look all that out of place on a 69 now.
Anyway, the wife is happy and it doesn't look all that bad. I can always remove it, weld up the holes and repaint the quarters. Actually, the paint is very thin and the entire car needs dents removed and repainted, so no big loss.

It's not as bad as I thought. It actually looks pretty good! It's hard getting over the fact that it has no nose cone but whatever. It looks good! :cheers:

now see, too me it looks too big on a 69 for some reason, don't get me wrong , i think all these cars look better without the nose but WITH the wing, but something doesn't seem right with the proportion
have you parked it next to a 70 with a wing just to look at it??  i wonder if its something to do with the angles on the 70 quarter panel
that's my bigggest worry with the tona wing on the 1st gen, even though i've seen the orange car his is custom and i don't know how close his dimensions are to the original

Other than the body character lines on the 69 and the scoops on the 70, the sides of the quarters are identical as far as I know. I had this same wing on the 70 Satellite and the only thing that stood out is that the standard back glass makes everything look a little strange. You definitely notice the difference in the back glasses with the wing in place.

I told Sandra that I was going to hang some clothes on the wing and take a pic of her new Arkansas clothes line.

I had some blue paint left and decided that I would just go with the blue on the braces just to see how it looked. Thought that to the uninformed, it might even look more like a factory thing.  ;D

We drove the car to Sonic tonight and everyone loved it. People were yelling as they drove by about how they liked our car.

It's been wild just driving this thing around today. People are going crazy over this car all of a sudden. I heard a guy at Subway telling his daughter that it was a Superbird and that it was the fastest producton car ever built.
The important part is, Sandra's getting a kick out of riding around in it. She's used to all of the attention though. Her limelight Cuda has the same affect on people.
Today, I've driven two fake wing cars and a real hemi car. It's been a good day.  ;D

I drove across town to my buddy Gary's (gary42) house to show him the car. He plans to have me build him a Daytona clone after I finish his 72 Charger Rallye so he's a wingcar nut as well. He tried to talk me into putting the Superbird nose on this car instead of building the 70 Satellite. He also thinks that it would look better at least with the wing decals. I have a new set of the wing decals in my briefcase, but can't make up my mind as to whether they will look good or not.
Hard to say without actually doing it. And, if I don't like it, I've just destroyed the decals for the other car and at $160 a pair, that ain't cheap.
I just know that we've had fun driving the car today. Now I like driving this car better than my cuda.

I can guarantee you that had I not taken the Daytona route with my 69, I would have gone ahead and installed the wing anyway. It's like driving a completely different car. The best part is being able to park in a regular parking space and not worrying about damaging the nose.
That will come later with the other two cars. ;D

I have a complete air grabber setup, but I can't use it since this is an A/C car. Anyone know of a way to change the compressor to a style that willl clear the air cleaner and air grabber?  It's the only other change that I would like to make.

you mean this , get a sanden and the bracket from Bouchillion Performance,fits great on the birdible and no clearance problems

I dont really love it but thats what makes the world go around right?  :shruggy: the extra body line from the 68-69 quarter keeps catching my eye. Ill see if I view it differently the more I look at it. :icon_smile_wink:

What did you do about the deck lid hinges?

what decals did you buy for $160.00?? I also think that a set of wing decals will help. it seems like there is too much blue and something to break it up will be more appealing.

The decklid clears the wing just fine.  The decklid will clear the wing on a Superbird as well. The stops are to keep it from smashing someone's hands and to keep the keys from hitting the wing should someone leave them in the lock cylinder. That's my theory anyway.

The Superbird wing decals that I bought were $160 a pair if I remember correctly. I don't want the word Superbird on my car. It's not a Superbird and never will be. I would like to find someone to make a nice color printed set of wing decals that has the "standing bird" and reads "Road Runner" twice instead of "Road Runner Superbird".

You won't hurt my feelings. I don't see anything as permanent. I can take the wing off at any point. I'm just having a little fun with one of my cars. I own 14 musclecars and I'm pretty much bored with every one of them to some degree, so it takes something new to excite me even a little.
Maybe it's the bodyman in me, but I don't have a problem drilling holes in my cars. I'm used to cutting on cars. It's my job.  ;D

I think the 69 air grabber setup extends into the a/c compressor area more so than the 70. Not sure. I'll check into the Sanden setup.

With the bubbled rear window, the deck lid would contact the window plug on a SuperBird if allowed to open fully, so they welded stops on the hinges.  Pop the trunk on any real 'Bird and examine that area between the window and the deck lid; you'll see why they put the stops on.

My sanden and bracket  will fit perfectly  on my 69 also , I have another bracket your welcome to copy and try to mount the compressor under the alternator  ?   the 70 and 69 take the same seal so they are exactly the same size and with the door and actuator on the from on the 70 set up it has less room on the 70 set up to clear !!


   The reason i didnt use the bracket to mounted  it under the alternator is , it raised my alternator up an inch or so and hit my vaccumm pod actuator , but its a nice set up I really wanted to use it to hide the compressor away .

For now, I say "let's take the winger". We don't really think "Superbird" with this car and we don't look at it as anything other than a 69 Runner with a wing. We'll look at the Superbird clone differently though, I suspect.

If you buy a running, driving Charger, I see nothing wrong with going ahead and installing the wing first and then do the transformation as time and money allows. With the limited time that I have now, I'm kind of wishing that I had done that with my Daytona clone. I would have been driving a wingcar a lot sooner. Would have been kind of cool to have taken two wingers to the local cruises this summer. We've been doing the two cuda thing for several years and it's time for a change. :coolgleamA:

I love that car. The Blue with Black Stripes really set eachother off. The wing is just icing on the cake. In my opinion, Quarter decals would take away from the clean look. :yesnod: :Twocents:

The wing has given me new interest in this car. I plan to put on new front disc brakes, better exhaust and the air grabber setup that I've had sitting around here for years. I would love to put the AAR style side exhaust on the car. I wonder if anyone's done that with a b-body before.
Maybe I'll even fix the dings and dents and repaint it next year.

I know their was an ad for the RoadRunner in '68, with a blue/black car like yours, that had an AAR exhaust sticking out. The RoadRunner was holding a helmet, and the hood bulges were HUGE. Wish I had a copy of it. :scratchchin: It was in Mopar Action a while back.

We also decided on no decals, just plain jane. And, we're going to put the air grabber system on, maybe this weekend.
It turned cold and it's raining and sleeting today so we can't drive it. We're kind of bummed out.  :D

Bouchillion Performance makes a bracket to mount it under the alternator and hide the Sanden compressor but you have to remove the mechanical fuel pump and run an electric one.  That's what I'm gonna do on my car.  I t really hides it well, which is what I want.

By the way, that Road Runner looks awesome!  Who'd thunk it?  I can see why it's getting so much attention now.

I like the idea of placing the compressor down low, but I don't like the idea of losing the mechanical pump. Over the years, I've seldom had a mechanical pump go bad, but I've had a few electric pumps go out at the most inopportune times. That's the one thing that I worry about with Sandra's cuda. She has a a high pressure pump for her fuel injection and I keep thinking that it's going to fail on one of our long trips. I keep meaning to buy a spare to take with us just in case. The in-tank pumps are the best, but those aftermarket setups are extrememly expensive.

I remember seeing that ad. I think in the real world, the exhaust would be a little further back. Seems like those repro AAR mufflers are pretty expensive. Too bad Flowmaster doesn't make something similar.

a set of glass packs would work fine exiting in front of the rear wheel  . i'm doing that on my challenger  . 3 inch cherry bombs . mounted close to the collector,  exiting in front of the rear wheels .should sound sweet .  :cheers:

i just put glass packs on the daytona . they sound great . old school, 60's sound .  :2thumbs:

There is a very small mech fuel pump  avail . this way you can mount comp low , just fab your own brackets

I have the two chamber flowmasters on my 71 cuda and they sound great. I mistakenly installed the 3 chamber flowmasters on Sandra's cuda and they're way too quiet. The 383 that I just built for the runner has a nice sound, but the mufflers are stock type and they're way too quiet. I need a little rumble. I sat with the lady that is the product rep for Cherry Bomb at the Sema new products award breakfast. I should have offered to do a little product testing.  :brickwall:  Let me know how that works out on your car. I'll probably just use the original tips that are on my car.

That compressor sits in real tight where the pump normally sits. I don't see any way to use any type of pump in there. I'm going to remove the compressor and not do anything about the a/c until the daytona clone is finished. I'll probably be working on two a/c systems at once. I'll just install the air grabber for now and drive the car for a while.

Ironically, the similarity between Superbee and Superbird is the very reason that I don't have a Superbird today. About eight years ago, I had a guy offer me a Superbird in partial trade towards my Super Comp Dragster, trailer and Crew Cab Dually. I was all for it but my wife said no, she doesn't like Superbirds and she thought they were downright ugly. A week later, we were at the Mopar Nats and as soon as she saw the Superbirds, she went nuts and I said that I thought that she didn't like Superbirds. She said, oh I meant Superbees. I love Superbirds. I called the guy back and he had just made a deal on another racecar the day before. This is a true, heartbreaking story. Since then, I don't go by what my wife says as much. I just do the deal and explain later.
A lot of people around town are referring to my car as a Superbird. It's just too much trouble explaining the difference so I just smile and keep going.
Wait until they see the Daytona clone in a couple of months. I'm sure they'll call it a Superbird as well.

Thanks Ken. Yeah, it's Joey's car. I'm going to finish assembling it for him. That car starts so nice and runs so much smoother than I expected.
Harry keeps kidding him about it sounding like a 318. It does ...sorta.

The 70 Chally I sold in Nov had that set up.  Former owner put them on.  At first it was a little too noisy coming out near the window but the more I drove I got used to it.  It was a 318, no headers though and not a big block.   Biggest problem was that the tips would ocasionally rub a speed bump that was a little high.

Stuart, I'll check it out closer. I know that there are numerous pulleys and brackets for the big blocks. That was a problem when I put the crate hemi in the challenger, I had to order several different versions until I found the ones that lined up the best.

I'm going to try to get my son to help me make a video of the car going down the highway. Should look pretty good.

Sorry but I don't know what brand they were.  He had taken the car to a muffler shop and had them installed.  Looked to me like ordinary glasspacks.  I don't recall seeing any special brand name on them.  Fairly simple--two lead pipes, glasspacks, and then the bend to the side with round stainless tips.  Front side of the tips would make a dinging noise when gravel or whatever got thrown up from the front tires so they always needed some cleaning or polishing to keep them looking nice.   Nice deep tone but I could hear the car on the main road long time before my wife would round the corner in the neighborhood to our street.   I can only imagine how much more louder a big block with headers would be.  Personally for me I wouldn't want it for an everyday driver but a cruiser would be ok.  I guess, at almost 49yrs old, having that level of noise just about under the window everyday and more with the windows down doesn't have the same appeal as it did 30yrs ago but that's just me.

Original AAR/TA's had a special muffler with the inlet and outlet on the same end. Maybe it's not necessary to use that type of muffler. I would like to figure out a way to do the side exhaust thing. I just know that I don't like the looks of the exhaust pipes coming staight out the back like they are now. Looks a little redneck to me. I like the rumble that my cuda has. There's nothing like the sound of a mopar.

No. I've actually made a color copy of the decal before and placed it on this wing when it was on the Satellite. I might try that.

I appreciate the offer, but I just bought a set on ebay that bigblocksam pointed out. They're the black lettered versions. I wanted black since it would match the black hood treatment a little better. I may go all out and put the black Plymouth lettering on since the wing decals look kind of plain without the quarter panel lettering.

I already did the hemi thing with my wife's 70 Challenger convertible. We sold it to build our new body shop a couple of years ago. I have a few hemi parts still, but I don't get into the hemi stuff the way that I used to. I can build three 440's for the price of one hemi. I want to keep the 383 in the runner since it's a 383 car. I just built this 383 motor in 2007 so it doesn't have too many miles on it. It starts fast and runs great, so no complaints.

The Daytona clone has a 440 and my wife's Superbird clone will have a 440. In fact, we just picked it up this morning. We found a complete running HP 440 and 727 that a guy had mounted to a truck frame. Had a new Holley 750 on it.  He started it up and it ran so smooth and with no smoke whatsoever. It had 70 lbs of oil pressure. The truck frame that he had it mounted to had a 8 3/4 with a 489 case suregrip 3:23. I bought it all...cheap. Loaded it up on the trailer and brought it home. I've already traded the truck housing and axles for a 68 b-body housing and axles.

Since I have a complete driveline for the car, I'm going to save the 5.7 hemi driveline that we had planned to use for one of my cudas.
My future project plans tend to get long and complicated sometimes.  ::)
