Our Daytona is a track pack car having 4.10 at the rear, question being gas down under is about $5.40 a gallon for the good stuff and being in the country the car will see a lot of highway driving. Who makes a ring and pinion around say 3.23 for the Dana?

How about getting an Gear Vendors OD unit for the car?

Tim L

Originality... Cost... At the moment we've already got enough on our plate although it's not a bad idea. Cheers.

Threw it out there though since its not a permanent modification to the car, good luck with her  :2thumbs:

Try Dr.Diff for the gears

or put one of the overdrive transmissions in it...

I thought 3.54 was the tallest gear for the Dana?

Tim L

Due to the fact anything higher wont fit in?

Ford trucks....    (I know I know) came with Dana 60's from the factory some years...    they had a 3.33 gear ratio...   it is the tallest known gear set for a Dana 60 - finding them is semi-difficult but you should be able to if you look hard enough

2013 Dodge Challenger R/T - 5.7L Hemi / 6-speed / 3.73 Limited Slip

1973 Dodge Challenger Rallye - 340 / A-518 / 3.23 Sure Grip

or go with 3.54's and MASSIVE tires

my 4 speed 'bird has 3.54's and 255/70/15 rears.  it helps a lot.

I thought that there was a company that made a set of taller gears for the Dana rearend. I have somewhere around here some info for a Charger 500 that had the dana rear end in it, that they were running a set of 2.94 gears in it, or it might even have been a 2.76. Although they were custom made, but I'm sure that someone could do the same thing now as well.

superbirdtom

What the heck did the nascars use to go 200 mph? I heard they used rearends form station wagons. anyone?

8 & three quarter rear ends with ..2:94  2:76 ..... think i read they had a 2:50 gear set also  :scratchchin:  :popcrn:

My bird has 440+6 with 8 3/4 and 2:76 Posi. At 75 she's just purring.

superbirdtom

I remember having a 440 super trac pak challenger r/t 4 speed car with 4.10 in high school and went on a road trip through canada from Prince Rupert to San Fran in 1975 . My one horse town was fine for those gears from stoplight to stoplight but man on the highway it was murder being passed by everyone.  Is the orange on an automatic?  and you bet the highway gears are great for the long haul to car shows and such, nice bird.

There's one more wrinkle to this story that not many people know about:

Dana actually came out with a little-used "Dana 61" casting just for the purpose of fitting a taller gear into their D60 diff design.  I don't think it was every really low even then, but I think it got them down into the 3.23-ish range or something.

Aero426

For those with a 4-speed, the Passon gearset with 4th gear becoming an overdrive would be an attractive way to go.    No hacking of the floor.

superbirdtom

are you saying you have to hack floor if you use gearvendors overdrive on a 4 speed??  do you like the tremec 6 speed manual tranny?

The Keisler 5-spd require cutting the tunnel some on a 68-70 B body.    Not sure on the GV unit, but my recollection is it's a very tight fit requireing some massaging of the tunnel.   The Passon gear set is the least instrusive when looking at the car because it uses the factory transmission.

superbirdtom

so the final gear is a 1.25 to 1?

hemigeno

More like 0.73 or 0.75:1, but you'd have to get the facts from Jamie / Passon Performance.

Thank you

To answer your question I have never heard of a DANA 60 with a 3.23 but you can definately have a custom gear fabbed up for your axle. :2thumbs:

The Dana 61 was used in the "front" axles of 89' to early 90's Dodge 4wd diesel 727 automatic trucks. I beleive the gear ratio was 3.08. The rear axle was a Dana 70. This ratio was dropped when the automatic overdrive came out.

I have often thought it would be a nice setup to put these axles in our '91 Dodge diesel with a 5 speed manual overdrive to get better highway mileage in place of the 3.54's.
