New found Superbird production information

I put this on Moparts tonight, FWIW

The www.aerowarriors.com/new.html page has a lot of new found information on Superbird production.

The 10/21/69 minutes item #9 says there will be 5 pilot cars and 1 body in white at that time. The NASCAR 1920 serial # list (available from the Daytona Superbird auto club) shows 5 cars delivered 10/17, 10/24 and 10/29. All the later cars on the 1920 list come in larger groups. My thought is that the 5 cars could have been the pilot cars. Brennan Cook has just sorted the 1920 list on dodgecharger.com (aero cars). He has identified RM23?OA149855, the potiential 5th car built in serial # to be possible. A thought would be that could have been the BIW car (I know BIW cars didn't have serial #'s) but it would have the modifications started.

The 10/30/69 meeting minutes. Item #3)a) says there was interferance between the air cleaner and hood (question here why would this happen if the '70 Coronets already worked since the back of the Coronet hood was used for the Superbird?) First 22 parts to be reworked.

Item #3)f) A pillar moulding fit problems. First 160 sets to be reworked. (note: I have one of the first 130 cars plus a mid production car and 1 set of parts counter mouldings from 1977, 3 sets of mouldings. The 3 passenger sets are identical, the early driver one has differences)

Item 3)g) the first 31 hood character lines different those hoods to be used.

Items 3)a&b) first 100 valances to be used but need changes.

Item 7) 5 tools and gages missing (David Patik I believe called them fixtures) So on the early cars were some things hand drilled and fitted?

Item 2) first 500 cars had late show up of decals (wing, nose or quarter?) Where were these cars fitted with decals in a field? (from the memo it doesn't look like the dealers put them on)

11/13/69 minutes. 1)on schedule 2)Decals stop and go shipments-overtime 4)defects-especially scoops (again my thought is what do we see on early cars?).

11/13/69 Milestones Memo there was a proposed Belvedere Body in White to Creative proposed 9/10-actual 9/15. From the Nascar 1920 list the 1st. Superbird was received at Clairpointe 10/17. So these are probably not the same cars. Was the process to send a car to Creative before the pilot cars to fit things?

Same 11/13/69 Milestones Memo says the first production cars were shipped to Clairpointe 11/13. The NASCAR 1920 list shows car #6 shipped to Clairpointe 11/3. I believe this reinforces that the first 5 cars were pilot cars.

After reading this info I think it would be very interesting to look at the very early cars, especially 1-5,1-22,1-31,1-160 to see what was different from the later cars, and especially to have the early car owners look at their cars.

What are other thoughts?

Galen,
10/30/69 meeting, 3a hood clearance issue:  Standard Coronet hood would work just fine with a 440 4bbl air cleaner, but what about the oval Hemi and 6-pack air cleaner?  They would have only been in Coronet R/T's and Super Bee's with domed or ram air hood.  First 10-15 VIN's (NOT production numbers) are 6packs or hemis.

Before anybody asks, yes I used to own V0A149852, 2nd earliest VIN, but #51 on the hit parade.  It had a 70 RR front end on it by the time I bought it.  I remember almost nothing about the car itself.  Sold it to a guy here in Phoenix with a beat all to hell white 'bird front end.  Probably in the late 70's.  If Redbird doesn't remember seeing it when he picked up the Tor Red 'bird , then it was gone by then.  Damn, I'm getting forgetful in my old age.

Bruce,

You had a Limelight SuperBird-swapped hemi, TA Challenger, Turbo Corvair and the Tor-Red car I bought from you in the drive. No wing car with a flat nose. I think you charged me $100 or $200 less for the slots on my car rather than the Rallye Wheels. Galen

Greetings All,

It is amazing what still surfaces.  We may have a very clear picture of what went on someday.

A while back, (more than a year) there was an auction on Ebay for something described as "Superbird Blueprints".  I think they sold for $800 or so.  I could not tell whether the data was something new or if was a different combination of already known data.  Did this new information come from those Blueprint documents?  Does anyone know who bought/won the auction?

Thanks,

Question & Answer Answered On ebay on the booklet

Q:  Your photos are not in focus. Will you reshoot them please. What is the history of this booklet? Did it come from the factory? Apr-28-07
A:   I included two more pictures however they are not the best due to my camera. One is of the nose cone and the other is of the installation instructions. I bought this information from a collector back in 1981. Thanks.
Q:  hello, im starting to build a 1970 superbird replica for my 80 year old father,[he had one of these cars in the early 70's],is it possible to buy a set of copys of your orignal blueprints,it would be a shame for me to buy these and ruin them building a car, as these are to important to a real superbird owner thanks for your time, tommy Apr-28-07
A:   Because of the age of these prints I do not want to start making copies of them. Someone else asked the same question and I gave them the same respose. Thanks for asking and good luck.
Q:  could you please tell me how many pages are in this blue print booklet and dose it cover the complete superbird change over or just the nose cone area Thank You Rob Apr-27-07
A:   These prints cover everything. NASCAR part installation, Lynch Rd. Installation, nose cone, wiring harness, wing struts, etc. Most of the dates on the prints are 9-26-69 so you know they are from the time frame. Thanks.
Q:  how many pages are included in the binder?? What else is included in the binder?? Are you going to be at the mopar swap meet this Sunday at Centerline?? If you are I would like to see it to see if I am interested in bidding on this. Thanks Dale Apr-26-07
A:   I don't have a count on the pages. But to estimate there a about 80-100 prints of the pieces and installation instructions. There is nothing else included but what is described. I was not going to attend the swat meet. Trust me, you won't be disapointed in this piece of history. Thanks. Depending on the day/time I may be willing to meet closer to my location so you can see this

I am reminded of this since the current owner of car #64 has asked questions here.

I went back to the 1920 list when I saw car # 64 car listed.

It occurred to me that except for the first 5 cars, which seem to be pilot cars of some sort, up to car #97 and before there was a big lag at Clairpointe in time from receiving the car to shipping it, generally at least 5 days. I would propose that it might have been from some of the items not fitting as I earlier noted. If this is so I wonder if they just drove the cars out to the parking lot while the fitment and delivery items were worked out?

Once things get going at Clairpointe, a lot of cars arrived and left there in a day. Later there were pockets of cars that stayed for several days. Weekends and periodic supply issues may have been a factor in these cases?

Ton's of info in that collection!  In the next few months I should have some free time to go through it.  My spreadsheet of items to track for the timeline keeps growing!  Thanks!
