Just trying to see just how many years this is going to take.  :scratchchin:

What are the current approximate price for the parts needed to to the job.

1. Nose(prefer steel)

2. nose brackets ,latch tray ,etc.

3. Wing (prefer the top of the line aluminum piece)

4 Wing support plates, and braces.

5 Deck lid hinges, close out panel, and etc.

Whatever else I have forgoton to mention.

Thanks Brian

i think i paid about $5000 . i made deals with other members on this board and they made me the parts i needed . top notch parts too . where you can save bucks is on the nose .they start at about $700 to $7000 . remember that's just for the shell .

the list hotrod gave you are for the higher end parts . which is great but i couldn't afford that vender .

so i had to find parts that where just as good or better in some cases . (dane's wing ) but cheaper. daytonalo, hotrod  and dane . make great parts . Rene

There are better deals out there for cheaper quality parts, but I prefer to stay with the better parts when possible. Generally they hold up better and fit better. I've come to realize that you get what you pay for even with wingcar parts.

If I can get enough people to commit, I plan to make another batch of wing braces and front support braces. Wing braces will be $90 a set unpainted and the front braces that include the frame brackets, latch tray support and valance support should be around $125 a set. Shipping usually runs $15 per set in the 48 states.
The wing braces are copies of an original set provided by bigblocksam and the front braces are copies of repros provided by Howie.

quality is the thing  and ya gotta use metal z brackets and metal in all moving parts in the lighting system . glass won't take the abuse in the long run .

HEY HOTROD! get off the computer and go put the nose on your daytona .

Rene, I had planned on painting the wing for the Daytona clone this weekend. I got as far as final sanding one upright. I had also planned to make my wingwashers and install them and the wing braces. Didn't happen.
I did manage to disassemble the dash for the black 69 runner, primed all of the panels, front and back,  for an antique gas pump, sanded and primed a hood with custom stripes for a Western Star truck that a good resto customer of mine owns, repaired the turn signal switch in my wingrunner and moved the left exhaust tip up an inch on the wingrunner.
In addition to the work in the shop, I also made three trips into the city, mixed and tinited the custom stripe paint for the Western Star hood, picked up a rim blow wheel at a friends house over in Oklahoma for my son's cuda and helped my son-in-law with his Mustang engine. I also drove the wife's cuda into town at lunchtime today and then washed and chamoised it. I've been kind of busy. Maybe I'll get the wing painted as soon as some of these other projects are out of the booth this week.

Actually, I need to paint the Daytona parts to get them on the car and out of my way. They're taking up about 100 sq feet in my shop.

We're taking two cudas and the wingrunner to Branson in August for the Super Summer Cruise so I'll need to use what little spare time I can get to prep them for the trip. So many projects, so little time.  ;D

I'll make a list of the people that need the parts. If I get even half of an order pre-sold, I'll go ahead and start on a new order of parts.
These wing braces will work on a Superbird as well. I can make some lower brackets that will look like the original lower Bird brackets, but won't be the exact dimensions. Very close though.
Here's a pic of my Daytona braces being used on my 69 runner with the steel repro Bird wing.

Roger440, use of a VEGA plug? ($100-200)  that takes care of window trim etc,  while not perfectly correct... well its close I would say.

For a steel one (plug), as original?  $2400?  With out window or trim yet.... guess you make the trim and then $400 or so I am sure plus for a window.

I am going with the vega route.... call me cheap

Back in the 70's it used to get cold around here occasionally. People didn't have ice scrapers so they used kitchen utensils to remove the ice from their windshields and back glasses. So, as a result, most of the vega hatches are rust free but the glass is ruined. I managed to find a couple of them with good glass at a local salvage yard. I probably should have bought the others as well.  I might have found good glass from those rusted hatches up north.
I have three stored in the body shop but they all belong to Howie. That boy can find stuff like you wouldn't believe.  ;D

Figure a budget? Start with $$$, then add more $$$ and just before you start don't forget to add $$$. About halfway through the conversion you will need to stop and add double the amount of previously spent $$$. Then you take all the $$$ and divide by .50 cents/hr and you will come close to the req'd hrs. Your only compensation is that when you are done the total $$$ spent will be eqalled in chiropractic fees by onlookers wrenching thier neck for a second look.

In all seriousness, many members here have/are bldg clones and they seem only to willing to help you! Good luck in your build.

nice to have bucks , i don't think  a metal valance makes a big difference in a clone. yes all moving parts should be metal . i think my valance was $125 and it fits like a glove .looks great too . latch tray would be better in metal . cause it bolts to the top of the z brackets and radiator support and adds support to the nose . a metal nose is nice , cause you can say,  it has a metal nose ,  but does it make a big difference . not to me .i've seen metal noses that looked terrible. even on original cars . it's how you make it fit  Dane makes the best wing . hands down. :Twocents:

Rookie question here: how does the trim and glass shape/size on the Vega hatch compare to the original trim and glass on the Daytona? Does anyone have a side-by-side comparison of an original Daytona rear window next to a Vega clone Daytona window? It just seems like a helluva coincidence that they'd be almost identical. Vegas really are good for something.

Bull There is a tread in the Aero section... you dont need a password your allowed in if you dont casue trouble in there..... :D hahahahah  I can try to find it for you too, but it has side by side pics... the VEGA is slightly different, but close.

If I can get caught up enough, I plan to make another run of Daytona parts. I'll make the steel wing braces and steel nose support braces. I'm going to try to make run of the steel wing washers if I have time.
If the steel prices haven't changed...
The wing braces will be $90 a set unpainted plus actual cost of shipping
Nose support braces which include the latch tray to core support brace, the valance to nose brace and the two frame brackets, will be priced at $120 a set plus actual cost of shipping.
The wing washer price has not been determined yet. Should know soon. I hope we can keep the price down. I think a lot of guys could use these.
They will not have the indentions like the originals but will fit and function properly. The fab shop wanted 5K to make a set of dies to punch the indentions so that's a no-go.
We're still trying to find a way to reproduce the steel deck lid closeout panels. I kept one to use as a template just in case. So far, the cheapest way that we've found is to make the panel in two pieces, left and right, and then weld them together, but even that's cost prohibitive.

The wing braces and front braces will be ready next week. The fab shop has lost the info on the wing washers and it looks like I'll have to start all over again on them. They were waiting on me to find out what gauge steel to use.

Does anyone happen to know how thick the original steel wing washers are?

My guess is .060, 16 ga.

The only thing I have to go by is the fiberglass version and of course that doesn't help at all.
I would think that the wing washers would have to be thick enough to help support the quarter under the wing. Seems like 18 gauge which is .048 might be a little on the thin side. But then again, maybe not.

I was going to say 16ga., on a guess, to me 18 seems light to me but, I dont know the originals all that well.

I would think thicker material would be better especially since the originals had extra contours pressed into them which provided additional strength that the repro's will not have. The wing washers that I built for my 69 runner were made from 5052 .090 aluminum. They worked perfect, but I would rather make these from steel so that they will look like originals. That is until you poke your head up under the quarter panel and look closer.

You're absolutely correct about the lack of contours making a difference. Personally, I think the originals were overkill.

Here's a pic of one of the aluminum wing washers that I made for the runner. They don't look correct since they don't have the steps at the trunk gutter, but reality took a severe left turn on this project before I ever got to the wing washers.  ;D

I think the fender washer also provides support on the underside of the 1/4 as these wings will provide up to about 600 lbs of down force. Without something backing up the factory panel I could see the pressure from the wing causing damage to the top of the 1/4 over time. I also would just feel better knowing that I has some thicker material backing the wing up.

Troy

We're getting way off topic here but... if you adjust the wing correctly there's no down force (and, if you want, lift). Then you're only worried about the weight of the wing itself and any side loads from cornering. The washers spread the load from the exterior sheet metal and transfer any forces to the braces which, in turn transfer them to the chassis. Tying all these areas together should also provide some extra rigidity. With enough down force (ie high speed racing) the quarter would buckle which would defeat the purpose of having a wing in the first place.

Troy
Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

hotrod98

The main purpose of the wing washers is to keep the wing from buckling the quarter when installed. The countour of the bottom of the wing isn't exactly the same as the top of the quarter.  With the washer it spreads the load out evenly over a larger area. I've installed wings with and without the washers and you can see the difference even without trying to move or shake the wing.
In my opinion, they are a requirement as are the wing braces. It takes both to support the wing properly.

If anyone decides to test the wing on thier stock vehicle at 200 mph+...
I would like to see a video, a copy of the police report and if available, a copy of the coroner's report.  :icon_smile_big:
