What to look for, when seeing a Hemi.

Chargerfreak:
This afternoon, maybe, i'm going to look at a Hemi engine that's for sale.
My question is what to look for, where are the numbers what do they mean?
It's supposed to be a early Hemi and the ad doesn't say if it's a 426. Will i see the difference between a 392 and a 426 immediately?

All input is appreciated, haven't really looked into Hemi information before because i never thought to get one.
It's supposed to have a tranny to and he can let the engine run at the place..

A Hemi has the same 727 as a 440 and 383 right??

Greets,
Chris.

Charger-Bodie:
The early (first generation) Hemi engines had the distributer in the rear.

The 2nd generation Hemi has it in the front , just like a 383 or 440.

maxwellwedge:
The newer (426) Hemi will accept any 383/440 trans. Hemi trans had beefier innards than most of the big block transmissions but any will bolt up to and function behind the elephant.

Lots of good info available at this site: http://www.mopar1.us/bigblock.html

If what you seek is the crown jewel, then I think that most everyone would say that it is the 426 Hemi Stage I & II, produced from 1964 to 1971, with the casting number of 2468330.

I am not clear where that casting number appears on the block, I think it depends on the year of manufacture and whether it is a Hemi for racing or street use.

Commercial 426 Hemis had the casting number 2658836. Again, location of the number on the block I think depends on the year. I believe they can be built up just like any Hemi.

The site mentioned above has lots of info but not the location of the numbers.

The first generation Hemi is a great motor and should still be considered for a build.

Here is great info from the folks at thehemi.com. This should help you nail down exactly the motor you are looking at (block, heads, intake, exhaust).
