just a guess, but it could allow for a quicker axle swap on pit road, if the shaft gets broken? that seems to happen with some regularity even today, at tracks with concrete pit stalls.

always wondered about them , why did they go to floating axles ??  safty incase the axle shaft broke ??

Yes, it is a safety feature.  If you break an axle, the wheel and tire do not go flying.

Real Racers Wear Polka Dots:
This is Ramo's 1968 outfit. It's in amazing condition considering the age. Judy Stott made these. I believe they won an award for best dressed crew at one of the midwestern state fair events. Judy says that the polka dots on the pants were done by tracing a half dollar and painting in each one with Liquid Embroidery. Can you imagine some pretty boy modern Cup driver having the cojones to wear something like this?  I think it is pretty cool that these have been kept and taken care of.

Same shirt in 1968 before the extra patches were added.

Same from me Tan Top.  I feel like I'm back in school learning stuff!

Hey Doug, tell Ramo that I'll give him $10 for that Plymouth jacket.  That was really cool.  As far as the polka dot pants...he would have to pay me!   :o
I love the smell of nitro in the morning.

This is a groovy fan club shirt from 1978.  By then, Ramo was racing the Kit Car style Volares.  I am told it was found at a yard sale in Keokuk recently.

Well, for the Labor Day parade, Ramo's family had a surprise in store for him, which was this indian headdress.  Ramo used to have an indian painted on one of his early cars, and Keokuk is named for Chief Keokuk.    Here's Ramo's son Lance getting him set up.
