There's no end to it either. And they usually take it so serious too, like they have no idea anyone would think it's odd.

A friend of mine lived over there for quite a while after college and just describes the entire culture as bizarre.  He says that everything is "silly" and they seem to work under the idea that if you pretend serious or scary or bad doesn't exist, then nothing bad should happen.  He told me once that if you consider California to be a nanny state then you can think of Japan as being a kindergarden state.
His words not mine.

I know a guy who taught English there for a few years and he said the Japanese culture is really into pain. Pain in their game shows, pain in their relationships, etc. I wonder how that dynamic plays into your friend's theory about an ignorance to all things bad.
