Hey - If it is in MCG it must be true!

Ghoste

Which is why I came here to verify. :icon_smile_wink:  I love the mag and they have uncovered some great things but they have jumped the gun on an awful lot of cars too.

The top was added a little later after the car was delivered.

I had 665 and knew the then owner of 666. I had the wing, rear window, decklid, latch tray and a bunch of other parts that were stolen (decades ago) off 666. I got them from the owner of 665 when I bought it. 666 is here in Ontario - The owner is a friend of my restorer up here but I have never spoken to him directly. I know he was agonizing over putting the top on or not. I think it is neat it was a "Day 2" thing but if MCG is saying it was put on by Chrysler or Creative I would disagree.

Ghoste

MCG is implying that it was done at some sort of "prep" center after it left Creative but before it arrived at the dealer.  They are also saying that the decision has been made to restore it with the top.  That worries me a little only because efforts seem underway to legitimize as being original so it shouldn't be too long before it's fully touted as such.  They reprot the current owner by name and province so I was kind of hoping you knew him or of it.

nascarxx29

I agree it would have to be customized not every factory or Creative
I got MCG next feature story :icon_smile_big: My daytona had factory deleted seat buttons from Chrysler & Creative on the rear seat .And just on one side top right how many other daytonas got that not a hole or thread  1 of 1 so far

Yes.  Anyone want to start a pool on how long before it turns up at B-J described as the only real Mod Top Daytona ever built?

I remeber seeing this car in an old episode of 'In Search Of' with Leonard Nimoy.

Same car was on this post for sale in San Fransciso.

Well, that explains the top.

If I remember, the guy that had the Daytona was actually in Canada..but he listed it in SF to see what the market would bring...he was-is a friend of mine....have not talked to him in a long time...I don't think I even have a way to contact him....

We met when we took our Daytona up to the Mopar meet at the College up there back in the 90's

For some reason, Steve was his name I think....he sent me pics of said car that was sitting in his place

I know the owner of the Mod Top Daytona :nana:
Here's a picture of the original top with 4 samples of NOS material.

I don't have the latest MCG yet but the short version is that the company that made vinyl tops for Chrysler back in the day was located it Canada. Chrysler had them make their "Mod Tops". They have various samples from which Chrysler picked and choose from. The samples you see here are part of a 4 separate rolls sent to Chrysler. The guy who headed up the project kept a section of each back. As you can see they match up perfectly with part of the top removed from the Daytona. Seems that Chrysler did in fact have some involvement with the top going on to the car because they had the only complete roll.

It never made the cut for a regular factory option.

The car is being restored with a steel nosecone.

I heard about that Dave.

The mod top was available on a few 69's well before the late 69 Daytona came out so the material was in full use and could be ordered from a dealership -no?

I know there was no mod-top option for the Chargers - but vinyl roof add-ons were very popular back then (and vinyl side moldings) and a good trim person could make one for any car.....that and the material being available....well, I stand by my original post. That and the fact that a previous owner told me the original owner wanted it and had told the dealer to put it on....which is something one can take with a grain of salt but 20 years ago he volunteered that info with no reason to make it up.
