THE CHARGER PUNK

I was browsin around and happend upon this, since i am a huge fan of the 1969 dodge charger daytona i had to bring this to the table. there was no info on the car just one pic, anyone have a story on this car as it seems to be a real wing car and being only 503 made wouldnt be hard to find info about this one,(as you can see this pic was taken very early such as 1969 or 70 as the car is wearing redline bias ply tires and the car looks fairly new) post your thoughts-MATT

golden73

Kinda hard to decide if I like it or not with just that one pic.... got any more?

Deffinately different though

Blusmbl

That looks like a fairly new Michigan license plate on it, though.  I bet that picture is much newer than you're thinking.

I like it. Reminds me of the paint schemes that Richard Petty ran in the early 70's.

Maybe Chrysler painted that to lure Petty back away from Ford.  Kinda like saying  "Look what you are missing out on"

Great old pic!!

I have seen that car before....think it is one of my magazines or books. I am pretty sure the picture is not from '69 or '70 but, it is from a few years back. It is a unique paint job as most Daytonas are painted original colors.

One of the Wingcar experts will probably have plenty of info for you shortly.

probably isn't a factory paint job...tail panel is not black, That paint scheme dosen't do it for me, I'd have to stip it and paint it yellow!! :yesnod:

There was a Daytona, painted like that in Hot Rod back in the early eighties,it was an original Hemi car,and a real Daytona! Someone said in one of the threads, that it has since been restored back to stock!

golden73

I like the side profile of the car, but not sure about the 2 red stripes down the center. It does look like it is missing the nosecone as well  :yesnod:

Just the angle it's photographed at, the nose appears absent!,I,ve seen this car around several years ago..........the "extra stuff" hanging underneath? is typical of all wingcars;.......it's the K-frame rubber seal thats been "blown" off it's C-frame clips, that's why most wingcars don't have them, they did'nt last very long after the car was driven off the dealers lot!........and the same thing happens today with the repro pcs!........................................Mike G.

That was the old Pete Haldiman later owned Jim R from CA .Blue red hemi daytona seen in hot rod in like 74-75.Used in maremont exhaust ads.Might currently be in Mo in PJ hands. The k frame diaper shield either got left off by .The servicing dealer. As it was a problem to deal with that thin tar paper shield and to reinstall without sagging down .Ive seen a few cars that still had it on it .It was retained by speedometer cable clips. That are sometimes still found on the nose channels straight bars.Another car I recall with close to that paint job .Was Larry B in IN.Had a low mile 440 car painted similar. And was seen on some car calendars .Its also was the first sold US daytona

I think it is pretty cool since the whole restored better than day one deal grew old when people started losing sleep over paint dabs.

Would look much better with some old Hurst mags.   What's the sense of a classic paint scheme with the OE type tires?   ???

Not only that, but you can't hardly change the oil filter (especially on a Power Steering-equipped car) without either being a contortionist or partially removing those rubber seals.   It was too much trouble to put them back on if you took them off, and the seals would get oil all over them (when you took the filter off) if you left them in place.   I think a lot of them got "lost".

Did Superbirds have these seals too?   Just wondered if Chrysler did the same thing with these seals as they did with the holes in the fender scoops - where they put them on the Daytona just in case NASCAR wouldn't let the track versions of the car have that feature if it wasn't on the street version too, but then took the chance with the Superbird that they could have what they wanted on the track w/o being on the street car.

What's with the paint job?  It's a friggen awesome paint job, that's what.  I love the Petty color scheme!
Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.  Especially if they have access to the internet.

I like the paint scheme.I was wondering if the drivers side rocker has a dent in it right along the bottom. Looks like it to me. Does anyone else notice this?

The "Maremont" muffler Daytona, is an original Hemi car, albeit some custom touches, last owned by Mr P. Haidman

Ghoste

Pete's name has come up quite a bit here lately, hasn't it?

69_500

Pete owned the car used in the add, yes, but I think Dave got it right when he says the first picture is of another car that was owned by a gentleman here in INdiana in the 80's. Low mileage car that was recently up for sale for $395K.

nascarxx29

That paint job was old school .The daytona it was on had less than 5000 original miles on it .It also had a dealer installed six pack .Prior owner in IN L Bell .Car is the first US sold daytona .It was for sale on cars online a while back for like $395.000.Back to its original R4 red

The Aquamax...yes, this bike spent 2 nights underwater one weekend. (Not my doing), but it gained the name, and has since become pseudo-famous. :)

Ghoste

I agree Dan, I think we are talking about two different cars here.   But the paint schemes are pretty close and when that first pic was posted, well, it had been twenty years since I last saw that Maremont ad.   Unless of course, it's one car and belonged to two different owners one of whom changed it slightly from the first scheme?

THE CHARGER PUNK

As you can see the car in the muffler ad has a v-21 option done out in red and has no red side paint, has bigger mags on it, and has no antenna. While the car i posted up has small bias ply redlines on 14 inch magnum 500's and has an antenna-MATT p.s. (Both of the cars colours schemes are wicked though)

72chargerSE

THE MYSTERY IS SOLVED!

This car is now owned and restored by a member of our club...I have seen this car numerous times, as it was displayed at the Detroit Autorama a few years back.

Here's the link..Mike

And dual mirrors on the Maremont car which by Doc74's pic, it doesn't look like the first car has (but it's hard to tell).  Also hard to tell, but it doesn't look like the Maremont car has headrests?

69_500

Well the biggest differnce in the two cars is that one of them is a HEMI Daytona, and the other one is a 440 car.

If the headrests are not there, it's because they were removed or the seats changed.   All Daytonas would have been made after the 1/1/69 date when headrests became mandatory.

72chargerSE

All.....

I actually saw, with my very own 2 eyes, Browney's Daytona with the funky paint job. Trust me, it's the car.

Ghoste

Never thought of that.  They are probably there but I had the question mark because I wasn't sure.  The pic was just unclear enough that it made me wonder.

Daytona R/T SE

Here's another shot of what I believe is the "Maremont" Daytona, I'd love to have this photo (minus all the magazine lettering ) blown up to poster size  :yesnod:

Ghoste

It does look like the same car.  You need to pm 6Pk Runner, I think he do about anything in that field.
