Even though it only has 12,000 miles, that doesn't mean it's not a weathered car prior to any form of restoration............ Wonder what the history behind it is. Could have been tucked away in a garage or barn for decades.................. Must be still putting it together............

It has to be a tough 12,000 miles if it needs a resto......I would have preferred it as it was.

There are other Black Hemi's around aren't there?

There are other X9 HEMI 500's out there. And there is even another one with less miles on it.

The 12,000 miles needing a restoration either says it was treated bad for those 12,000 miles, or it wasn't stored in a very nice place and because of how long it was there it needs to be gone through.

I can't think of any X9 HEMI 500's that are 4 speeds though. The 2 I can think of off hand are both AT cars. One is an AT on the column the other an AT in the console. Oddly enough both of those cars have way less miles than 12,000 on them as well.

WB General Lee

For that money you can own practically any two Daytonas take your pick. I know its a Hemi but it doesn't have a wing.

C500

This is the only photo of a black 500 I have. Hemi with a red strip also. Not sure if AT or 4spd. Beautiful ride  :drool5: :drool5: :drool5:
"An aggressive exterior with power to match was enough to pull in the performance boys-especially when abetted by a pair of pipes blaring out the back, and brawny red-sidewall rubber hitting the pavement."

The car pictured is an AT on the column car. It is a very low mileage car as well, very nice car. And if you break it down it has the highest VIN of any known HEMI 500. Which is within a few digits of the highest VIN 500 that is known.

hemi68charger

Wonder what ever happened to the black hemi C500 out originally out of Houston?

A great restoration project. It's at 30K now and the reserve isn't met yet.
So what will it go for?

And what is it worth after restoration?

My inclination would be to do a cosmetic restoration, ie: seats, rug, engine repaint....correct hubcaps....and drive it.

I would like to know who is the one who talked the owner out of the car, or into selling it. I have known about this car for about 5 years and tried like crazy to get a chance to come down and look at the car previously. Only to get a run around quite a bit. Then after 3 years finally getting to see a few photo's of the car and talk to a few people who had actually seen the car. But could not get anything worked out to get a chance to come down and actually see the car.
Very nice combination of options on the car. I like the cruise control. Color combo is awsome.
As far as I know it is one of at 3 that is in the color combination of X9 with C6R interior. And of those 2 are 440 cars and one is a HEMI.

I'm no authority on 500s, but I am familiar with the history of these cars - to a point.

From what I've been able to gather, all 500s (and later Daytonas) were derived from Charger R/Ts.

The initial batch of 500s actually left Creative Customs with their XS designation still in place. As more of the cars were processed they changed to the more familiar XX, then onto Daytonas which were all XX.

If I actually had the 500 list in front of me, I could tell you definitively, but the ad states it an "early production" 500.

Saying that, maybe it wasn't given the benefit of a full tag conversion.

If you see any Charger 500's with XX on the fender tag that have a production date listed before November 14th of 1968 then it is a fake tag. EVERYONE of them before B14 has XS. it is about a split as far as the ones on B14 as to what they have. After that its XX as far as the fender tags are concerned. Engine stampings is another story and so are the broadcast sheets. Nothing followed the same order it seems on these cars. Then you have the 3 odd ball cars that don't have XX on anything at all on the cars, tags, engine, trans, broadcast sheet or anything yet are still 500's. Go figure.

I might sound strange but I would only do the mechanics, try to get some dents out and would drive it as it is. Survivor cars are hard to find and I like them even if the "patina" is rougher.

During the summer vacation of my sophomore year of high school (1988) a few of my friends and I went to Darien Lake theme park and on the way home we came upon a car lot full of muscle cars. It was late in the afternoon and the place was closed but we pulled in for a look. There were quite a few nice cars on the lot and I remember us looking at a black Hemi charger just sitting outside in a lineup with a few other cars along side the building. We were in disbelief that this car would be outside. This has to be the same car. I have often wondered what became of that car and now I know. I'm glad I got the opportunity to see it in person all those years ago

Speedy Greco car has more than 181 miles on it. The car that Steve Fox had is the one with 181 miles showing on odometer. Which is what the odo read in 1981 the first time I have a picture of the car.

Just out of interest, how is the cruise control actuated? Is it on the stalk and twist to release?
And what is the identifier on the tag for it. Thanks

If you mean stalk = turn signal lever, that is correct. On/Off/resume (?) are intergrated in the lever. The chrome ring and the push button on the tip of the lever comprise the switches for the cruise control.

yes, twist and push end button.   :popcrn: :drool5: :drool5: cruz cool  :2thumbs:, man that guy needs to pull that wire at the console previously uses to getting it started and install the new switch finally and get on those other stack of items to get it driving, what is the hold up?  N88, I have two with that option that are fairly original, let me know and I can take a photo if desired.    Man interior looks really familiar  :D.

Ok, Thanks Troy and XS29.
So, does the twist and release mechanism on the stalk also grab the carb rod/lever in the engine bay and retain it?? Or actuate a diaphram ?  Yes pictures if you could XS29, I have'nt seen any detail on it anywhere, pretty cool option. Thanks

There are other X9 HEMI 500's out there. And there is even another one with less miles on it.

Danny,
I know of an extremly low mileage Hemi 500 that used to be in Cincinnatti, sold off and after traveling from collector to collector it found it's way to Louisville ( 2 times) but I don't know of Steve still owns it

I'm pretty sure it was an auto, but don't remember if floor or column shift

Steve Fox had a b5 hemi 500 aswell it was a board members car on this old posting
ey guys, wondered if anyone knew anything about my 500, 426 auto, b5 with white stripe and white interior. I bought it about 4-5 years ago from Steve Fox in Kentucky. as a basket case needing resto. Car had Rat Exterminator in script across the doors, old drag car? anybody know anything about this car or its history?

there's a diaphragm in the control unit.  the speedometer cable is in two pieces on a cruise car, with the control unit as a junction.  That's where it reads vehicle speed.  it's then a vacuum unit which opens the throttle.

Cool, They are rare anywhere, here too.  Although I have two, I have never made efforts to get them working, on the list, just down a ways :RantExplode:

I would note the diaphragm piece is common on some other 69s and more obtainable, found one this last year on a dart/valiant as I recall and it was the same, however the bracket and cable were different.  I think the bracket, although not that hard to make for a metal guy, is unique to Chargers.  Some one else may know for sure.  I would say the A body and C body ones I have found in the past the bracket does not match my old crusty driver.
