Pop's 440

Pop built a 440 for his truck back in '97.

.030" over 440
9.5:1 compression
L2355 pistons
Stock rods ARP bolts
Performer RPM intake
800 cfm Edelbrock
His ported 452 heads 2.14/1.81 valves
260H Comp hydraulic cam
1.6 Crane Gold Race rockers
483 LB-FT @ 3400 rpm and 404 HP @ 4800 rpm

He installed it and stood by the living room window looking at the truck. Said, "I got it the way I want it and now I won't get to enjoy it." He died weeks later. I inherited the truck and drove it briefly and parked it.

My son is working a set of 346 factory iron heads using the stock 2.08/1.74 valves and wanted a dyno mule (we'd been talking about one for awhile) to test them and some other ideas, and wondered what to use.

Well hey, what about Pop's 440?
We pulled the engine outta the truck.
So off came the 452 heads and on went the 346's.
Out came the 260H and in went a XE285HL.
The 800 cfm Edelbrock went back in the box and an 850 Mighty Demon went on.
Flycutting the pistons deeper and the 94.4 cc chambers of the heads gave us 8.9:1 compression.

Results as of yesterday, 498 LB-FT @ 3,600 rpm and 496 HP @ 5,400.

More to come hopefully.

Funny how people (and other animals) just sometimes know.

Anyway, that is an interesting combination with the compression ratio and all.  Very good results from what looks to be a very streetable package.

Removed the Edelbrock Performer RPM and installed M1 single plane.

I see in this case, the M1 was worth a handful of HP and torque. Good to know. Thanks!

Running a box stock M1 single plane. Lift the carb and put a 2" HVH 4 hole SuperSucker on the M1 and drop the carburetor back on.

Time to pull the heads again and maybe install some real valves.

justcruisin

How much vacuum are you pulling with that xe285hl cam, I was considering running the xe284h but am not sure if it will run my brakes. I currently have the xe275hl in a 10.2:1 440, it pulls 13" @ 900 rpm and 16" down the road.

heyoldguy

On this engine it's only about 8" @ 800 rpm and 11" @ 1050 rpm.

heyoldguy

Made a pull with the hydraulic lifters (zero pre-load cold), 2.08/174 valves, then switched to 2.08/1.81 and solid lifters (.005" hot lash).

Because we didn't make one change at a time it's only conjecture but I attribute the difference at the bottom rpms to exhaust valves and the upper rpm changes to mostly the solid lifters with some exhaust influence. Many tests left to go but I don't think I want to switch back to the hydraulics so we may never know.

Next tests will be with the solid lifters and the 346 heads with 2.19/1.81 valves flowing:

.400....247/211
.500....274/232
.600....295/248
.700....303/257

This certainly not our best effort with this style of head as the 2.14 valves produced almost the same results. But the flow differences will still let us get some direct horsepower/flow comparisons with this type of build.

heyoldguy

Same as the test above with the M1 and 2" spacer but with the larger valves.

This is GREAT !!!  :2thumbs:
Sounds like you are having a lot of FUN with this Engine !
Only wimps wear Bowties !

heyoldguy

Great deal of fun. Two more pulls between other projects this morning. 552 LB-FT and 658 HP. Just enough time to check plugs and see that the carburetion is way lean but not dangerous. Gotta pull the engine off the dyno and get ready for a guy's 496 BB Chevy tomorrow. Then we go back to Pop's 440 with the XE285HL using the EZ heads.

heyoldguy

So, EZ heads and XE285HL. 548 TQ and 585 HP @ 6000 RPM. 500 TQ 3500-6000 RPM. The big heads keep the horsepower going and twice we shut the 440 down at 6500 RPM where it was 595 HP.

rednuck

How much porting have you done to the EZ heads? or are they fairly stock for testing and just waiting for you guys to do your magic on them.

heyoldguy

The EZ heads have great deal of work done to them. Way more head than the 440 needs. 2.25/1.81 valves, full Max Wedge port size, 347 cfm @ .600" lift. They match the flows of our Victor heads that made 845 HP on a 500" wedge normally aspirated with a single 4bbl. We wanted to see how a big head would effect the little 440. What did kill power on the 440 was when we used an Indy 3X manifold and a 1140 cfm Dominator with the EZ heads.

i am assuming the indy 3x was ported to max wedge also.  & what intake worked best ?

Because of the size of the ports in the heads and what I have on hand I only had two options. What I used was an Edelbrock 2495 Victor ported to near max wedge with a 850 Mighty Demon and the 3X/Dominator combination. The Demon makes good top end power but struggles with air/fuel ratios in mid range. The Indy 3X starts life a very tall Max Wedge port with a plenum you could park a motorhome in. An Indy dual plane would have been nice to test but I must use what I have on hand.

THANK YOU for the reply  :2thumbs:

Hi i am building a similar motor and i noticed that you put a mechanical secondary car with a single plane intake. Are you running a auto or a manual transmission? I have a 727 and i am not sure that intake and carb setup would work with it.
If You Ain't First, You're Last!!

heyoldguy

Similar to which configuration of this engine? A quick answer is, for street use you are generally better off with standard port heads, a dual plane and vacuum secondaries.

MagnumForce

Similar to the engine with the cam swap after you pulled it out of the truck, thanks for the quick response, i had a feeling that would be the case. Will your engine see much street use?
If You Ain't First, You're Last!!

heyoldguy

There is so much going on around here right now we're not sure what to do with this engine. We just got a 1974 shortbox half ton and thought it might make a good shop truck if we put the iron heads back on Pop's motor and put it in that 3.55 geared, 4-spd, half ton. Then there is the '73 Charger that is waiting for a motor.
